Romans Summary • Romans 1 - 3 – The Problem of Sin – The Need for Salvation • Romans 3 - 5 – The Way of Salvation – Justified By Faith • Romans 6 - 8 – The Life of Salvation – God's Sanctifying Power • Romans 9 – The Sovereignty of God • Romans 10 – Salvation and the need for Evangelism

Romans 9: 30 -32 30 What should we say then? Gentiles, who did not

Romans 9: 30 -32 30 What should we say then? Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained righteousness—namely the righteousness that comes from faith. 31 But Israel, pursuing the law for righteousness, has not achieved the righteousness of the law. 32 Why is that? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were by works. • Gentiles didn't pursue righteousness achieved righteousness. Israel pursues righteousness but does not achieve righteousness. Is pursuing righteousness wrong? Does God only love the prostitutes and tax collectors? • The difference is faith. The gentiles received Christ's righteousness credited to them by faith VS the Jews who wanted to be declared righteous based on their ability to keep the law. • Romans 6: 16 -18 - We became slaves to righteousness.

Romans 10: 1 -4 1 Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God concerning

Romans 10: 1 -4 1 Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God concerning them is for their salvation! 2 I can testify about them that they have zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3 Because they disregarded the righteousness from God and attempted to establish their own righteousness, they have not submitted themselves to God’s righteousness. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. • • • Paul's heart for Israel. The Jews had passion for God, and pursued righteousness their own way. What does it mean that Christ is the end of the law? Christ is the end of the law – end of condemnation of the law. Justification received through faith (Romans 4: 22 -25). Not under the law, but not without law, I’m under the law of Christ (1 Corinthians 9: 21)

Romans 10: 5 -13 5 For Moses writes about the righteousness that is from

Romans 10: 5 -13 5 For Moses writes about the righteousness that is from the law: The one who does these things will live by them. 6 But the righteousness that comes from faith speaks like this: Do not say in your heart, “Who will go up to heaven? ” that is, to bring Christ down 7 or, “Who will go down into the abyss? ” that is, to bring Christ up from the dead. 8 On the contrary, what does it say? The message is near you, in your mouth and in your heart. This is the message of faith that we proclaim: 9 If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord, ” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation. 11 Now the Scripture says, Everyone who believes on Him will not be put to shame, 12 for there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, since the same Lord of all is rich to all who call on Him. 13 For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. • • • What’s the consequence of attempting to earn righteousness by keeping the law? Obligated to perfectly keep the entire law. (James 2: 10 For whoever keeps the entire law, yet fails in one point, is guilty of breaking it all. ) Quoting Deuteronomy 30: 12 - you don't have to search far and wide for the righteousness from faith. The gospel message is in your mouth and in your heart. Romans 10: 9, 10 great salvation verses. What does it mean to confess Jesus is Lord? What is the significance of believing in Christ’s resurrection? What is believing with your heart? Christ’s resurrection is a cornerstone of our faith 1 Cor 15: 14 (if this is not true our faith is in vain). Paul continues to level the playing field. God's salvation is available to all.

Romans 10: 14 -17 14 But how can they call on Him they have

Romans 10: 14 -17 14 But how can they call on Him they have not believed in? And how can they believe without hearing about Him? And how can they hear without a preacher? 15 And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of those who announce the gospel of good things! 16 But all did not obey the gospel. For Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed our message? 17 So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the message about Christ. • • • What is required to bring someone to the point of salvation - Preacher is sent, word is preached, word is heard, the word is believed, call on Jesus as Lord and Savior. The importance of evangelism (the reason why we’re here). vs 16 what is obedience to the gospel? *Seems to be equating obedience with belief, obedience in accepting Christ as Messiah* Fishers of men (Matthew 4: 19). Our fishing rod is the gospel message of Christ.

Romans 10: 18 -21 18 But I ask, “Did they not hear? ” Yes,

Romans 10: 18 -21 18 But I ask, “Did they not hear? ” Yes, they did: Their voice has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the inhabited world. 19 But I ask, “Did Israel not understand? ” First, Moses said: I will make you jealous of those who are not a nation; I will make you angry by a nation that lacks understanding. 20 And Isaiah says boldly: I was found by those who were not looking for Me; I revealed Myself to those who were not asking for Me. 21 But to Israel he says: All day long I have spread out My hands to a disobedient and defiant people. • • • Why did Israel reject Christ and His message? God’s sovereignty shown in Israel’s rejection. Israel heard the message. (God had sovereignly chosen to share His message with the Gentiles) Psalm 19: 4. *The implication is Israel understood the message* (God had shown Israel that He had sovereignly chosen to make them jealous and angry through the salvation of gentiles). Deut 32: 21 God sovereignly chose gentiles to receive His blessing and salvation. God’s continued patience toward Israel.

Understanding Genuine Faith Romans 10: 9 If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is

Understanding Genuine Faith Romans 10: 9 If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord, ” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Matthew 8: 29 Suddenly they shouted, “What do You have to do with us, Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time? ” James 2: 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. The demons also believe—and they shudder. • • • How is our confession that Jesus is God different from the confession of demons? Demons know Jesus is God but they don't joyfully submit themselves to the will of God. Jesus expects our confession of His lordship to be an actual receiving of Christ as Lord of our life. (Luke 6: 46). How is our believing in Christ different from the believing of demons? The demons know God exists but the actions they take are against God's will. Our faith in God results in acts of obedience to God born of that faith.

Understanding Genuine Faith Ephesians 2: 8 For by grace you have been saved through

Understanding Genuine Faith Ephesians 2: 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. James 2: 24 You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. • • Is there a contradiction? Both Paul and James agree salvation requires faith. They are addressing separate issues. Paul is addressing Jews who were trying to earn salvation by keeping the law. James is showing that faith/belief is more than an intellectual understanding. Genuine faith will result in action that is born out of that faith. eg Abraham, Rahab.

Understanding Genuine Faith Matthew 7: 21 -23 21 “Not everyone who says to Me,

Understanding Genuine Faith Matthew 7: 21 -23 21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, ’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22 Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles? ’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness. ’ • • • Who is Jesus talking about? We saw from Romans 10: 9 we should confess Jesus is Lord, however, some confessions are not from genuine faith. Obedience to the will of God is the identifying mark of genuine confession of Jesus as Lord. What “day” is Jesus referring to? James 2 says works would accompany genuine faith. However, works can be performed without genuine faith. Repentance and progressive sanctification from “lawlessness” are better indicators of genuine faith than any great work that may have been performed in God's name regardless of how spectacular or seemingly gifted. What does it mean to be known by God? 1 Corinthians 8: 3 But if anyone loves God, he is known by Him. The greatest evidence of your love for God is your obedience to Him (John 14: 15) Jesus is saying marks of genuine faith are obedience, repentance and sanctification.

Understanding Genuine Faith Can we have Justification and Glorification without the hard work Sanctification?

Understanding Genuine Faith Can we have Justification and Glorification without the hard work Sanctification? Is this possible? 2 Thessalonians 2: 13 But we should always give thanks to God for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth. Titus 2: 11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, 12 instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, 14 who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds. Matthew 7: 14 But small is the gate and narrow and difficult to travel is the path that leads the way to [everlasting] life, and there are few who find it.

Understanding Genuine Faith What do we do with this? 2 Corinthians 13: 5 Examine

Understanding Genuine Faith What do we do with this? 2 Corinthians 13: 5 Examine yourselves to see if your faith is genuine. Test yourselves. Surely you know that Jesus Christ is among you; if not, you have failed the test of genuine faith. This is not an invitation to doubt, but to be honest to see if one is truly a believer in Jesus. • • Obedience, Repentance, Sanctification - Is this works based salvation? Jesus came to save the lost, the sinners. Coming to faith is not dependent upon anything we do - no requirements. Genuine Saving Faith results in: – Receiving the Holy Spirit and His accompanying power to overcome sin (Acts 2: 38, Romans 8: 13). – A spiritual rebirth (John 3: 3 -6) – Becoming a new creature (2 Corinthians 5: 17) – A new nature that desires to obey (Romans 6: 17) – A new nature that delights in God's law (Romans 7: 22) Our progressive sanctification will lead to acts of obedience, repentance, bearing fruit and increasing assurance of salvation as the Holy Spirit testifies with our spirit that we are children of God (Romans 8: 16).

Seeking and Finding God Matthew 5: 3, 8 (Be humble and pure in heart)

Seeking and Finding God Matthew 5: 3, 8 (Be humble and pure in heart) 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit [those devoid of spiritual arrogance, those who regard themselves as insignificant], for theirs is the kingdom of heaven [both now and forever]. 8 “Blessed are the pure in heart [those with integrity, moral courage, and godly character], for they will see God. Jeremiah 29: 13 (With all your heart desire to know God) You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. Hebrews 11: 6 (Seek Him with faith) But without faith it is impossible to [walk with God and] please Him, for whoever comes [near] to God must [necessarily] believe that God exists and that He rewards those who [earnestly and diligently] seek Him. Matthew 7: 7 -8 (Be Persistent in Seeking) 7 “Ask and keep on asking and it will be given to you; seek and keep on seeking and you will find; knock and keep on knocking and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who keeps on asking receives, and he who keeps on seeking finds, and to him who keeps on knocking, it will be opened. ” Revelation 3: 20 (He WANTS you to find Him) 20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.

The Need For Evangelism • The necessity of the Gospel. How will they be

The Need For Evangelism • The necessity of the Gospel. How will they be saved unless they hear (Rom 10: 14)? – Is there anyone you need to share the gospel message with? • We are called to go and share the word of God. (Romans 10: 14 -15) • Paul's selfless heart for the lost of Israel. (Romans 9: 1 -4, 10: 1) • The urgency for evangelism – The coming day of the Lord. (2 peter 3: 3 -7) – It is appointed unto men to die once. (Hebrews 9: 27) • The body of Christ - God's chosen method for expanding his kingdom – Matthew 28: 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. ”

Evangelism God's Way • Who build's God's church? Matthew 16: 18 I also say

Evangelism God's Way • Who build's God's church? Matthew 16: 18 I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; • Practice what you preach, let your life be a testimony to those you share with 1 Timothy 4: 16 Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you. • Our unity is how the world will believe. John 17: 21 that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me. 23 I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me

The Gospel In Romans 1 -3: The universal problem of the sin of ALL

The Gospel In Romans 1 -3: The universal problem of the sin of ALL mankind condemns us to face the wrath of God. No amount of work or good deeds can make us righteous in God's eyes. Romans 3 -5: God out of His Mercy, Grace and Love for mankind sent Christ to die on a cross and was raised on the 3 rd day having drunk the cup of God's wrath as atonement for the sins of all mankind. Thereby providing a means of receiving justification through faith in Christ. Romans 6 -8: God's sanctifying work in the life of the believer frees us from the power of sin in our lives. More than just being freed from the penalty and power of our sins, we are adopted children of God and made heirs to His kingdom. 1 Corinthians 1: 18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but it is God’s power to us who are being saved. Acts 16: 14 A woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple fabrics, a worshiper of God, was listening; and the Lord opened her heart to respond to the things spoken by Paul.
