ROMAN SOLDIERS AND WHAT THEY WEAR • Roman armour was made of metal strips laced together to give maximum amount of movement in battle. Their shields were made of wood and glued together to curve them. The helmets were made of leather or untanned skin strengthened by bronze or gold. The plume on top of the helmet is made of feathers or horsehair. Romans, in war, would attack in a tortoise formation, with shields in front and above so arrows didn’t hit them. The men at the back were lookout and would alert the troops when enemies were approaching. They also held the flag of their empire.
Romans daily life For breakfast, Romans would have bread and water and occasionally meat and eggs. Sometimes, on the way to school or work they would have a wheat pancake. For lunch the poor would have veggies and porridge or bread and cheese. The rich would have plentiful leftovers from the night before. In Rome, the rich would live in villas on the hills just outside Rome away from the noise and smell. They lived extravagant lives and had luxurious furniture and food. Wealthy Romans would often serve lots of dinner parties with exotic dishes and a fair few bottles of wine. Poor romans at work. Roman jobs: Common jobs were farmers, craftsmen, merchants and many similar. The rich could become lawyers or bankers if they’d had good schooling. Poor men tended to work 6 hrs a day, and women and daughters stayed at home. The poor, on the other hand, lived in shabby squalid houses that could collapse or burn down at any moment. Sometimes the poor would abandon new born babies to later on work as slaves. There were a lot of poor Roman families so they were called the Roman Mob.
ROMAN BATHS • Romans would try to go to the baths each day to clean and socialise. • They would clean themselves by putting oil all over their body, dipping in the water and scrubbing with a metal scraper called a sigil. • The baths were used until the 5 century CE • Everyone used the baths so it would be more like a public pool, but they didn’t wear any sort of clothing.
Roman sports Popular sports in Rome were chariot racing and boxing. They also did sword fighting, called gladiator fights which would end with deaths. Harpustum was a ball game that the Romans played. There is little knowledge of the game but is was known to be very violent How to play Gladiators: Gladiators were combatant men ( with weapons) that would entertain crowds by fighting and killing wild animals or slaves. Sometimes others would come with weapons and put up a fight against the standing gladiator. It was very gruesome to see people doing this but somehow impressed certain crowds.
Poor Roman men would wear a short or sleeveless, knee length tunic and ladies would wear a longer tunic. The clothes were made of wool. Men would, in cold weather wear breeches. Roman clothes Wealthy men More wealthy Romans would wear a tunic with a cloak wrapped around them, and if important they would wear a robe called a toga. They would also wear more expensive breeches in cold weather. The women would wear a stola. Most of the time they would wear jewels and make-up. Wealthy women in stolas Clothes would vary depending whether you were male or female, rich, poor or important.
Roman inventions Sewers and sanitation Arches Romans built arches at the very beginning of the empire. Aqueducts were first created in 312 BC and were used to transport water from rivers and reservoirs. Romans created straight roads. Most of these roads have been kept straight but have been tarmacked. Romans introduced drainage, which was a big improvement from the privies being used before. Roman numerals go back to 900 BC and are a much easier way to recall vast numbers.
