If his fighting pleased the Crowd and the Emperor he would be spared. If not then his opponent would kill him

He has a helmet with a fin as this is where his name originates. The Retiarius was the most unprotected fighter. He only had a shoulder guard to protect him He carried a net to try and whip, catch or trip his enemy and would use a trident (3 pointed spear) or dagger to attack.
