Who were Gladiators? Gladiators were normally criminals, captured prisoners of war or slaves who trained to fight each other. However they were sometimes volunteers. What would happen at a Gladiator fight? The gladiators fought to entertain the Emperor and the Crowds If a Gladiator was wounded he raised a finger, asking for mercy. If his fighting pleased the Crowd and the Emperor he would be spared. If not then his opponent would kill him
Were all Gladiators the same? NO! Examples of female Gladiators though this was made illegal in 200 AD
Different types of Gladiators had different weapons to make fights more interesting. Originally the different fighting-styles must have evolved from types of combat the Romans met among the peoples whom they fought and conquered.
Weapons and Armour
Murmillo The Murmillo was a heavyweight Gladiator carrying a large rectangular shield and a sword. He protected his left leg from his shield and his opponent. He has a helmet with a fin as this is where his name originates. The Retiarius was the most unprotected fighter. He only had a shoulder guard to protect him He carried a net to try and whip, catch or trip his enemy and would use a trident (3 pointed spear) or dagger to attack. Hoplomachus Retarius The Hoplomachus carried a small round shield and a spear to thrust at his opponent. His upper legs were heavily protected. He had a tall crescent shaped crest on his helmet.
