Cremation • Cremation was the most common burial practice in the Roman Empire. • They would basically burn up the body as much as possible. • The urn was mainly just a bowl made out of rock.
Tombstone • This is a tombstone which is made for the dead. • Some tombstones warn people of dangers within the dead or others make tombstone to brag about what the dead has accomplished.
The Funeral • They would close the eyes of the body while calling out the name of the person. They would then place a coin on the mouth, the coin was the payment for Charon, who brought the dead across the rivers of the underworld.
• The body was displayed for about a week for the noble ones who died and only a day for the low-poor ones that died. • There was a parade that happened while escorting the body outside the town. (it was forbidden to cremate within city limits) • The Romans would then say a eulogy for the deceased, burn the body and then collect the remains. (the mother or wife)
How the Romans honored their ancestors? • During the parade, the mourners would carry portrait sculptures and waxed masks of the people who had died before.
