Roman Empire in the first century CE. The heart of the Roman Empire was the city of Rome in Italy. Its leader was the Roman Emperor. The Roman Empire lasted more than 500 years. The Romans took control of all the land bordering the Mediterranean Sea. The Roman Empire gradually spread throughout Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa. When Jesus was born, Palestine was ruled by the Romans. It appointed members of local Population to help it administer the rules.
