ROLLING DECK TO REPOSITORY BUILDING A PROTOTYPE DATA
ROLLING DECK TO REPOSITORY BUILDING A PROTOTYPE DATA DISCOVERY SYSTEM: ROLLING DECK TO REPOSITORY
ROLLING DECK TO REPOSITORY Collaborative pilot project funded by NSF OITS Team leads: LDEO – Bob Arko SIO – Steve Miller WHOI – Cyndy Chandler
ROLLING DECK TO REPOSITORY Goal: Development of a prototype “data discovery system” to deliver data + documentation from ships to a central shoreside repository Design to be inclusive of NSF-supported ships: • UNOLS • USAP • USCG
ROLLING DECK TO REPOSITORY Benefits: • streamline + standardize data documentation • facilitate cruise planning and permits • improve data quality • facilitate data preservation and dissemination
ROLLING DECK TO REPOSITORY Development areas: • Central cruise catalog (database) and Web portal • Standard interfaces to routinely deliver cruise metadata + underway data from ship to shore • Standard data quality control criteria • Standard interfaces to maintain an event log at sea and routinely deliver to shore • Web services to publish catalog records and maps
ROLLING DECK TO REPOSITORY Work Plan: • (Fall ‘ 08) install cruise database and Web portal • (Fall ‘ 08 -Spring ‘ 09) pilot projects with operators to develop, test, and refine interfaces • (ongoing) report results at community meetings
