Presentation Overview v Description of Brainstorming Ideas v Description and Analysis of Initial Paper Design v Revisions and Description of Final Design v Discussion of Major Design Problems and Solutions v Performance Analysis of Final System Test
Brainstorming Drew pictures of possible roller coaster designs Choose to include following features Vertical loop Figure 8 double up Double down Straight 2 changes of direction Bump Main focus was getting as many points as possible
Initial Paper Design First feature: Downward slope, vertical loop Next: Figure 8 double up, change of direction, straight away Next: Double Down, change of direction, straight away, change in direction Final feature: Bump, small straight away
Analysis of Initial Paper Design Did not do full drawing of front view of coaster Did not use proper dimensioning rules Did not factor in angle of bank in track Did not tell where the track went the longest without support The design was way too ambitious and was not possible for us to build
Revisions to Initial Design Figure 8 Changes in direction Bump Changed dimensions Frustration
Description of Final Design
Downward slope into vertical loop Downward slope maximizing speed Vertical loop first because of speed needed
Figure 8 (single up/single down) and Straight Away Single up first because of speed needed to reach peak Single down to gain speed Straight away to gain space for next feature
Double Down and Direction Change Double down to get ball to final height Change in direction to keep the track on the table.
Bump Bump because it was required.
Catch Bin
Performance during Final Test Three perfect runs in a row Speed Sensors negative velocity
Major Problems and Solutions Vertical loop not consistent Charlie added a snap-fit and have Brad tweak when broken Figure 8 Double up Change Straight Away Change angle of snap-fit until it works Track too loose or too tight Pull the second up to a down track until it’s just right Angle of track Changed angle of track until the ball stays on
Summary Learned that building a roller coaster is harder then it looks. Calculations before build ended up being pointless. Got real-world experience in building a smallscale model. Stay organized. Elect a supervisor. Got third place in the class
