THE LONG CLIMB • Rising action in a plot is a series of relevant incidents that create suspense, interest, and tension in a story. • In literary works, a rising action includes all decisions, character flaws, and background circumstances that work together to create turns and twists leading to a climax.

CONFLICT • Conflict is a struggle between opposing forces in a story. • The

CONFLICT • Conflict is a struggle between opposing forces in a story. • The conflict can be internal and/or external. • An internal conflict is a conflict within the central character • In Inside Out, Joy struggles with letting Rylie experience any emotion other than Joy. • An external conflict occurs when the central character struggles against another person/force • Simba’s final battle against Scar in “The Lion King” is an example of external conflict.

HOW MANY HILLS DO ROLLER COASTERS HAVE? ? ? • Like any good roller coaster, the PLOTLINE has more than one climax. • Since characters experience multiple conflicts/struggles during the story, a single story can have more than one climax. • CLIMAX can occur at any point in the story, but the Main conflict usually reaches its CLIMAX near the end.

STAGE 4: FALLING ACTION • Once you climb to the CLIMAX, you have to fall back down to experience the full ride on the PLOTLINE • When you hear the words FALLING ACTION, I want you to lean forward like you’re going down in a roller coaster • FALLING ACTION usually takes the form of the action and dialogue following the climax that leads the reader into the story's end. • The hero has reached his/her goal, whatever his/her goal may have been. He climbed the mountain, he won the heart of the girl of his dreams, he won the big game or he found the buried treasure. But the story isn't over yet. • The falling action occurs right after the climax. It is what happens after the main problem of the story has been solved.
