Biography: Roberto Sebastián Antonio Matta Echaurren, better known as Roberto Matta, was born in Santiago, Chile on November 11, 1911. He completed his primary and secondary studies at the "Colegio de Los Corazones Sacred". Later he studied architecture at the Catholic University of Chile, but, disillusioned with this occupation, left for Paris in 1933. When he was in Europe and in USA, Matta came across artists such as Arshile Gorky, Rene Magritte, Salvador Dali, Andre Breton and Le Corbusier. Matta’s early works were abstract designs in crayon. He produced illustrations and articles for magazines such as the surreal "Minotaur". During this period he was introduced to the work of many prominent contemporary European artists such as Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp. In 1937 he officially joined the Surrealist group. My Infinite is the Instant, 1997 The first true flowering of Matta's art came in 1938 when he moved from drawing to oil painting. The works were created at this stage what he called "Psychological Morphology". In these paintings, Matta explored his subconscious through a language of abstract forms and constantly evolving and multidimensional spaces. Matta also refers to these works as "Inscape", with the implication that they depicted the inner landscape of the artist's mind, connected with its external reality. This period coincided with his emigration to the United States, where he lived until 1948.
During the years 1940 and 1950, the worrisome state of world politics found reflection in Matta's work, with paintings depicting images of electrical machinery and distressed figures. In his art Matta creates new dimensions in a mixture of organic life forms and cosmic ones. He was one of the first artists to take this abstract leap. Matta has divided his life between Europe and South America during the years 1950 and 1960 and was very involved in social movements in the years 1960 and 1970. He received numerous awards and exhibited in various galleries and museums with retrospectives of his work in the "Museum of Modern Art", New York, in 1957, the "National Gallery", Berlin, in 1970, and the "Centre Pompidou", Paris in 1985. In his later years, Matta has divided his time between France, England Italy, where he had a studio, a gallery and a school of ceramics. Matta provided the initial inspiration and crucial to the Abstract Expressionists. His artistic legacy had also a deeply personal nature, since four of his six sons became notable artists. He died in Civitavecchia, Italy on November 23, 2002. El Año de los Tres 000, 2000
