ROBERT ANDERSON Inventor of the first electric carriage
Who is Robert Anderson ? n Robert Anderson was a 19 th century Scottish inventor, best known for inventing the first crude electric carriage in Scotland around the time of 1832 – 1839. Robert Anderson (June 14, 1805 – October 26, 1871) was an American military leader. He served as a Union Army officer in the American Civil War, known for his command of Fort Sumter at the start of the war. He is often referred to as Major Robert Anderson, referring to his rank at Fort Sumter.
Place of birth and his activity n He was born near Louisville, KY, on June 14, 1805, Robert Anderson graduated from West Point in 1825. After his graduation, he fought in the Black Hawk and Seminole Indian Wars, served with Gen. Winfield Scott in Mexico, and translated military texts from French to English. In November 1860, Secretary of War John B. Floyd ordered Anderson to command a Federal garrison at Charleston harbor, in South Carolina.
Family of Robert Anderson n Although he came from a Virginian family, was married to a woman from Georgia, was sympathetic to slavery, and was not convinced that military efforts could stop the secession, he was never theless loyal to the Union.
The first electric carriage n Robert Anderson of Scotland invented the first electric carriage. Between 1832 and 1839 Electric cars used rechargeable batteries that powered a small electric motor. The vehicles were heavy, slow, expensive, and needed to stop for recharging frequently.
Use of this electric car n By the 20 th century, electric cars and rail transport were commonplace, with commercial electric automobiles having the majority of the market. Over time their general-purpose commercial use reduced to specialist roles, as platform trucks, forklift trucks, tow tractors and urban delivery vehicles.
Batteris Electric Cars n Electric cars depend solely on batteries. As such, the components of the Battery Electric Car greatly differ from the parts of a car with an internal combustion engine. Battery Electric Cars usually have three main components namely; the controller, the battery, and the electric motor.
Energy of electric car n In most cases, the energy that is needed to charge the batteries of the car is generated from power plants which burn fossil fuels to produce the electricity. This has posed some concerns due to the possible increase in energy demand that the electric car batteries will require.
Advantages n When compared with cars that use internal combustion engines, the battery electric car is much cleaner when it comes to tail pipe emissions. The electric car does not require any combustion to be able to generate energy and so, no gaseous emission will be produced.
Death of famous inventor n Retiring in 1863 due to ill health, he returned to Fort Sumter on 14 April 1865, the fourth anniversary of his surrender of the Fort, to raise the Union Stars and Stripes over the recaptured garrison. Anderson died on October 26, 1871, in Charleston, South Carolina.
