Road to Revolution The American Revolution was the result of a “road” of Britain’s actions and the Americans’ reactions that occurred from 1763 to 1775.
These all came about after the: FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR… which Britain won in 1763
French and Indian War which Britain won in 1763 Good result for Britain…they won all of the land from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mississippi River Bad result for Britain…a HUGE war debt left them fighting France for roughly 75 years.
So what did the British do, and how did the Americans react that led to the American Revolution and to our country’s independence?
Materials Needed : Before you start, you must have these items Tables Packet Pen and Pencil Textbook

You will see the following symbols throughout the powerpoint. Here’s what they mean… Stop! See Ms Smolyn for Colonists reaction your assignment. Think! You don’t have to write the answer, you just have to think about it. If you want to write the answer, you may do so on your table. British Action
Let’s get started… To begin you should have your first chart in front of you…Proclamation line of 1763 Read each slide carefully
BRITAIN’S ACTION… PROCLAMATION LINE OF 1763 - Problem: Pontiac, a Native American chief of the Ottawa Tribe, united tribes in the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley regions to rise up against the British and the colonists to kick them off their land send them back to the white man’s land east of the Appalachian Mountains.
Pontiac He was furious b/c after the French and Indian War, more white settlers started to move west of the Appalachians
Pontiac succeeded for a while, attacking settlers and their homes. Since this was now Britain’s land to take care of and the settlers were British citizens, troops were sent to defeat Pontiac, and they did!!
More fighting was the last thing Britain needed! So… Britain passed the Proclamation of 1763.
Proclamation of 1763
American’s reaction to the Proclamation line… FURIOUS!!! They had just helped Britain win the land during the French and Indian War and now wanted the right to live there!! So, they ignored it. Settlers kept moving west anyway! By 1770 5, 000 settlers had moved west of Pittsburgh.
STOP! You have an assignment! In order to receive this assignment you must show Ms. Smolyn your completed table.
Britain’s action… The enforcement of the Navigation Acts: 1. America could ONLY sell its goods such as sugar, tobacco and indigo to Britain!! Nowhere else. 2. Products that Americans brought from other countries had to go to England FIRST to be taxed! 1. What did this do to the price of the goods by the time Americans bought them? 3. All trading had to be done with English - made ships and English crewmen
American’s Reaction to the Navigation Acts… ANGRY!!! American’s hated the Navigation Acts because they couldn’t trade freely! Therefore, they SMUGGLED! Smuggling is buying or selling goods secretly and illegally without paying taxes on the goods. – What do you think smuggling did to the price of goods? What other advantage did the colonists see in smuggling?
III. Britain’s Action…TAXATION Don’t forget, Britain had to make money to pay off their war debt from the French and Indian War. The best way to make money quickly is to tax your people. Britain’s citizens in England were already being taxed heavily…did you know that? Then, Britain began taxing American’s too! – Do you remember some of the taxes? ?
STOP! You have your 2 nd assignment. In order to receive this next assignment you must show Ms. Smolyn your completed table.
America’s reaction to TAXATION…continued EXTREMELY MAD!! They said that “taxation without representation is tyranny!” What do you think the colonists meant by this? Look up any words in the dictionary that you may not know.
American’s reaction to taxation…continued The American’s also Boycotted, this means that if there was a tax of sugar, they American’s would NOT buy sugar. – Can you think of a modern day example of a boycott? What have you heard in the news? Or studied?
Thanks to the boycotts, some taxes were REPEALED or taken away. The American colonists also formed PROTEST GROUPS such as… – Sons of Liberty and Daughters of Liberty: organized protests, boycotts, rallies – Committees of Correspondence: wrote letters to all the other colonies to let them know what each other was doing about British actions.
The American’s had terrific speakers and writers who directed their anger at the British: – John Adams – Samuel Adams – Patrick Henry – Thomas Paine
STOP! You have your 3 rd assignment. Check in with Mrs. Smolyn. 1. Read Chapter 12 in your textbook Read answer questions on Thomas Paine’s Common Sense You can find both of these in the resource area.
Americans established a real Congress for its government - Taxation First Continental Congress Started in the fall of 1774 Met in Philadelphia Delegates came from each state to have a say in the government
There were violent reactions to the taxation as well… Tar and feathering…pouring hot tar on a British official and covering the sticky tar with feathers. Burn and attack an official’s home Hang a British official in effigy – make a dummy of the official and hang the dummy from a tree in the official front yard. Sometimes they would set the dummy on fire!
More violence… The Boston Tea Party…
The Boston Tea Party TAXATION Cold night…December 1773 Boston’s Sons of Liberty were so mad about Britain’s tea that they destroyed 342 chests of tea! Broke open the chests of tea and dumped them from the British ships into the Boston Harbor 60 Sons of Liberty disguised themselves with blankets and blackened faces… Took them about 3 hours to destroy the tea Caused a GREAT deal of expensive damage!!! (Some today would call this vandalism)
4) Britain’s Action…The Quartering Act Required Americans to let British soldiers live with them, and provide some basic things like food and drinks! One of our Amendments to the Constitution says we can’t do this…do you know which one?
American’s Reaction… FURIOUS!! They teased and harassed the British troops calling them Lobsterbacks!
STOP! You now have your 4 th assignment In order to receive your next assignment, please see Mrs. Smolyn with your completed table.
#5 Britain’s Action…Intolerable Acts After the Boston Tea Party, Britain was so mad about the destruction of the British East India Company’s property that it passed the Intolerable Acts. What does intolerable mean? Look it up if you don’t know. The Intolerable Acts closed Boston Harbor! Nothing could come in or out! So food or supplies to buy and they couldn’t make money!! Based on Boston’s geographic location, why would closing down the Boston Harbor be so HORRIBLE? ? Boston knew they were in trouble!
American’s Reaction to the Intolerable Acts… The First Continental Congress (see slide 21) met to make a plan! They wrote a letter to King George III protesting Britain’s actions. They decided that if things didn’t get better by spring of 1775, they’d meet again. P. S. Things did NOT get better…
Great job! You have now reviewed what you learned in 5 th Grade. – 1. Make sure all assignment are completed – 2. Show Mrs. Smolyn your tables and assignments 1 -4.
