Road Map To Success: Shaping A Nation Our first three presidents: Washington, Adams, and Jefferson, did much to establish precedents and policies that helped shape our young country and bring life to the Constitution of the United States. Almost immediately, liberal and conservative ideas about how our country should grow came into conflict, giving rise to the first political parties in America. And as America expanded suffrage, she became more democratic, as a greater number of Americans participate in voting. During this era the powers of the Supreme Court become more clearly defined and greatly enhanced by the Marbury v. Madison ruling. The highest court in the land will now use the doctrine of judicial review to determine the constitutionality of any law, act, or action.
