RNA Big Q: How does RNA differ from DNA? Big Q: How does the call make RNA?

ENGAGE - FAST FACTS ➤ Write down any facts or concepts you already know about RNA.

EXPLAIN - RNA ➤ RNA - a nucleic acid containing a long chain of nucleotides ➤ Facts about RNA: ➤ 1. Contains a Ribose sugar ➤ 2. Single Stranded ➤ 3. Contains Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine, and Uracil

EXPLORE - DNA VS RNA DNA BOTH

Explain - Why DNA and RNA? ▪ The Roles ◆ ◆ DNA - Master Copy RNA - Blueprints cytoplasm nucleus Regents Biology build proteins m. RNA ribosome

EXPLAIN - FUNCTIONS OF RNA ➤ RNA performs many roles in the process of Protein Synthesis: ➤ 1. Messenger RNA(m. RNA) - carry copies of protein making instructions ➤ 2. Ribosomal RNA(r. RNA) - two subunits used by the ribosome to make proteins ➤ 3. Transfer RNA(t. RNA) - takes amino acids to the ribosome

ELABORATE - A FOURTH KIND ➤ Small Nuclear RNA (sn. RNA) - edits the m. RNA strand before it leaves the nucleus. ➤ Requires Snurp (small ribonucleoproteins) to work. ➤ Together, they are known as spliceosomes.

EXPLAIN - TRANSCRIPTION ➤ Transcription - segments of DNA serve as templates to produce complementary RNA strands. ➤ Takes place: ➤ 1. Prokaryotes - Cytoplasm ➤ 2. Eukaryotes - Nucleus ➤ Requires an enzyme for synthesis called RNA polymerase. A becomes U C becomes G T becomes A G becomes C

EXPLAIN - RNA EDITING ➤ There are three regions used for editing RNA: ➤ 1. Promoter - signals location for RNA Polymerase to start or stop making m. RNA ➤ 2. Introns - portions of m. RNA that get cut out ➤ 3. Exons - sections that are spliced back together

ELABORATE - RNA EDITING ➤ Working with your group, try to edit the sequence of RNA ➤ ******Answer all questions in your Quick Lab Packet.

EVALUATE - EXIT TICKET ➤ Answer the following questions on a separate paper: ➤ 1. Give three main differences between DNA and RNA. ➤ 2. What are three types of RNA and what do they do? ➤ 3. Describe what happens during transcription. ➤ 4. What do you think would happen if introns were not removed from m. RNA?
