River basin management The Narmada River India
India Sagar canal for irrigation
Indira Sagar dam partially completed in Madhya Pradesh
Largest lined canal in the World Sardar Sarovar Project
Sardar Sarovar Dam, Gujarat, partially completed (upto E. L. 121. 92 m)
Task • Higher only read pages 182 -183 of intermediate book and answer questions on page 183 • Everyone read pages 182 -188 and make notes on relevant points i. e. – – World distribution of rivers Analysis of hydrographs and climate data The effect of a scheme on an area The need for a scheme and how to decide on the best location for one (physical and human factors – Social, environmental and economic impact of the scheme – Political considerations
Uses of the Narmada Consumptive Non consumptive Farming Fishing Domestic Transport Industrial recreation • Copy table then use pages 188 -189 to make notes on each
Planned Scheme
Water control Project • Every year floods killed thousands of people while for the remainder of the year many had insufficient water • Despite this 90% of all the water in the Narmada river passed through to the Arabian sea unused
• As with the Colorado it took a long time for the planning stages to be finished as the river runs through three states, difficulty lay in deciding how much water each state should be allocated and how much money each state should contribute towards the scheme • The world bank originally offered a loan to cover the cost of the scheme but this was later withdrawn
• This meant the building of the dams wasn’t started until 1980’s but even then work was slow due to fierce opposition from a number of groups • In 2002 the Indian Supreme Court ruled that work would continue but opposition continues to grow and 60 years after the first plans were drawn up it is still a long way from being finished • opposition
What’s it all about? • 30 dams 15 -130 m high (the highest is the Sarda Sarova dam) • 3000 smaller dams • Irrigation canals (the largest being 1500 km long making it the longest in the world) – Allowing • • Floods to be prevented HEP to be generated Providing water for the people Irrigation for farmland
Task • Answer the questions on page 191 pages 190 -191 will help you
Problems • Asides from costing $11, 000 billion the reservoirs will lead to the flooding of land (some up to 37, 000 hectares) causing homes and farmland to be lost not to mention the ecological impact
Task • Answer the questions on page 194 pages 192193 will help you • Copy the table 91. 3 on page 193 • If you finish – Check over your notes to make sure they are complete – Create a spider diagram/table/bullet list to summarise the river basin management topic (you may like to create two separate ones one for the Colorado one for the Narmada case studies
