PALEOLITHIC AGE… STONE AGE OLD Real Paleolithic people existed in a time period known as prehistory (period before writing). q We learn about them through the study of artifacts (Archaeology), and human remains (Anthropology). q They were the first hominids, or people who walk upright. q Two major developments of these people were the use of tools and creating fire (1 st technology ever!). q They were nomadic people who hunted and gathered food. q
Early stages of human development q q q 1 st Stage: Australopithecines or “the southern ape” lived 3 to 4 million years ago and were the first hominids to make simple stone tools. 2 nd Stage: Homo erectus or “upright human being” lived 1. 5 million years ago and were the first to use fire and tools. 3 rd Stage: Homo sapiens or “wise human being” lived 250, 000 years ago and developed two distinct subgroups. – Neanderthals, a type of homo sapiens, that lived 100, 000 to 30, 000 years ago and were the first to bury their dead. – Homo sapiens or “wise, wise human being” lived 100, 000 to 200, 000 years ago and were the first modern humans.
NEOLITHIC REVOLUTION… Revolution Agricultural q The real change in the Neolithic Revolution (8000 to 4000 BCE) was the shift from the hunting of animals and the gathering of food to the keeping of animals and the growing of food on a regular basis (systematic agriculture). q Humans could now give up their nomadic ways of life and begin to live in settled communities.
