Rigor & Relevance Framework Huron High School
Curriculum Development Pacing and Assessment Work Based on Data and Analysis n Stressing Rigor within the content area. n Stressing Relevance of material to students and connection to real world application. n Stressing Relationship building with students. n What works best and how can we adapt that to us? n
Rigor/Relevance Framework Knowledge (Bloom’s) Taxonomy Evaluation (Judge the Outcome) n Synthesis (Putting Together) n Analysis (Taking Apart) n Application (Making Use of Knowledge) n Comprehension (Confirming) n Awareness/Knowledge (Information Gathering) n
Application Model Knowledge in one discipline n Apply knowledge across disciplines n Apply knowledge to real world, predictable situations n Apply knowledge to real world, unpredictable situations n
Rigor & Relevance Framework n Member Resources
Four Quadrants n Quadrant A – Acquisition: Students gather and store bits of knowledge and information. Students are primarily expected to remember or understand this acquired knowledge. n Quadrant B – Application: Students use acquired knowledge to solve problems, design solutions, and complete work. Relegated primarily to predictable situations.
Four Quadrants n Quadrant C – Assimilation: Students extend and refine their acquired knowledge to be able to use that knowledge automatically and routinely to analyze and solve problems and create unique solutions. n Quadrant D – Adaptation: Students have the competence to think in complex ways and also apply knowledge and skills they have acquired. Even when confronted with perplexing unknowns, students are able to use extensive knowledge and skills to create solutions and take action that further develops their skills and knowledge.
Applying Our Knowledge What does this look like? n Verb List n Examples n In which quadrant do we operate most often? n How can we move toward quadrant D? n Application Model Decision Tree n Determining Level of Rigor and Relevance n
