Perfect Delivery “We strive to be the best; a company that goes the extra mile for our customers and the local communities within which we work. That means we take pride in seeking new ways to improve what we do, acting with professionalism, honesty and transparency to deliver each and every project ahead of our customers expectations. ” John Morgan, Chief Executive Morgan Sindall Group plc
Rework Across the industry rework costs us £ 20 bn per annum On average 5% of value on every contract Impact of carrying out rework: • It costs money Safety – 50% of safety incidents happen while rework is being carried out – 10 times the risk http: //getitright. uk. com/ • • Damages our reputation and precludes us from repeat business • Staff morale Reduced delivery costs: is free! • Phillip Crosby - 1979 – yes, Quality really
Background Our projects are information heavy Collection and processing of Information is resource heavy Contractors collect information in hard copy We currently waste time gathering information in hard copy, scanning, printing, processing hard copies, digitising hard copies and then: • We under-utilise the information that we gather • This is not lean construction.
What can we improve? Activity Traditional methods Mobile technology Completing Quality Typing up / scanning hand written Assurance check sheets documents / collating photos Accuracy: date / time / Completed retrospectively could lead to Time and date stamped as data is location recording incorrect information captured live and tagged to a location Reports / finding historic Sifting through ring binders or shared Snag. R inspection reports can be filtered information drives by date / inspection type and many more All data captured live on site Traditional Technology Hand written notes + photos captured + written up or scanned QA data captured on mobile device, live at site = time consuming = efficiency
Traditional methods Traditionally, inspection records are completed by hand on paper, this causes many issues including: Retrospective completion of forms, based on memory of what’s been recorded out in the field, photographs taken separately (if at all) and then collated when back in the office. Long winded, hand written notes • Location is not definite • • Illegible text Uncertainty of date completed • One page provided with no photographs (N 6 and Sierra A example)
So, what have we done?
Snagging apps

Snag. R reports
Quality Delivering quality excellence – Snag. R Inspections Using mobile devices such as i. Pads to complete inspections live onsite massively reduces the time conventional methods take. It allows you to pinpoint exactly to a specific location, record using our management system documents, capture evidence with the ability to add photos into the inspection document. Once captured on the mobile device, reports can be run from the desktop version of Snag. R and printed/emailed if needed.
Quality Delivering quality excellence – Defect Avoidance booklet This booklet is intended to assist our design, procurement and site management teams avoid many of the quality pitfalls that frequently occur within our industry. Its contents will help raise awareness of some of the more common (and more costly) problem areas in enough time to enable preventative actions to be taken This booklet can be used in many situations including: o Developing the design o Before sending out an invitation or reviewing a quote o Before commencing a new trade o Whilst monitoring progress of ongoing works o Checking / completing Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) A list of Quality Generic ITPs can be found in section 67 The references are also listed in each section where relevant.
Defects avoidance Packages of work B A C A) Section number and title (package) B) Generic ITP & Checksheet (currently 52 available) C) Points to consider when letting packages / works ongoing.
Defects avoidance Packages of work for the supply chain Teams can print off sections of the electronic/pdf version of the booklet for the supply chain to use. This is a good way of ensuring the supply chain are considering the same issues our teams will be, from within the booklet. As the supply chain move from one Morgan Sindall site to the next it is anticipated that by providing them with these sections each time that it will help them raise their standards.
Supply Chain Specific supply chain meetings – Safe, On Time & Snag Free Holding subcontractor meetings themed around the Perfect Delivery Customer Commitments Safe, On Time and Snag Free. Make use of Lean tools such as Collaborative Planning, Visual Management etc.

Aviation Quality Mark The quality mark is currently been rolled out onto all Morgan Sindall projects. • A sticker is placed on all products or works when: an element of work has been completed in line with the ITP – it has been built to the specification and drawings and has passed all relevant inspections and tests – – It has no defects – It is completed as per the benchmark When a quality mark is awarded it is recorded as an inspection on Snag. R. This inspection is then loaded onto 4 Projects. • We are currently in the process of recording all quality marks on a master model of the airport showing where each is located. •
Health, Safety and Environment Report Handwritten inspections not fully filled in Digital forms have mandatory fields ensuring completion Photo pages can also be added
