History of Rickets • Rickets was founded as early as the second century and in 1640 s in England. They found the cause of rickets in the 1920 s and recommended in the 1930 s that its important to drink milk and to have a cod-liver supplement for children to take for the Vitamin-D that they need. It is most common in under-developed nations.
The Cause of Rickets • Rickets is caused by a deficiency of Vitamin-D. There are 3 different types of rickets; Nutritional Rickets, Hypophosphatemic Rickets and Renal Rickets.
3 Different Types of Rickets • Nutritional Rickets are caused by a Vitamin-D deficiency. Mostly common in dark-skinned infants or children who are kept out of direct sun-light. • Hypopohosphatic Rickets are caused by low levels of phosphate. The bones become very soft and pliable. • Renal Rickets are caused by a number of kidney disorders. The people who have this are usually have a hard time regulating the amount of electrolytes in there system.
Symptoms of Rickets • Bone Pain or Tenderness • Dental deformities • Delayed formation of teeth • Decreased muscle growth • Impaired Growth, short stature • Number of skeletal deformities such as abnormally shaped skull, bowlegs, ribcage abnormalities and breastbone, pelvic and spinal deformities.
How to Treat Rickets • Vitamin-D supplements are always recommended also to get plenty of sunshine. But depending on the severity of the abnormalities a referral to an orthopedic provider for evaluation is recommended.
