Ribbon Shading You will be able to demonstrate
Ribbon Shading You will be able to demonstrate consistent layering of pencil crayon and value changes with this exercise.
Ribbon Shading • For this demonstration you will need your sketchbook, your eraser, a 2 H pencil, and coloured pencils. • You will need to refer to your value shading handout for more details and to refresh your memory of that technique exercise.
Ribbon Shading • To begin you need to think about how the light shines on a satiny ribbon. Notice how the light hits ribbon. Where the ribbon is flat there is more light and the ribbon appears to be lighter in colour and where the ribbon is twisted it appears darker in colour.
Ribbon Shading • To draw the ribbon in your sketchbook you begin with a 2 H pencil and using very light lines draw a curved line from the top of the page to the bottom of the page.
Ribbon Shading • Next you draw another curved line that intersects with you first line. Again, remember to use a very light line.
Ribbon Shading • Repeat this process two more times on the same page in your sketchbook so you have three ribbons.
Ribbon Shading • To shade the ribbons you must first select a colour. (whatever makes you little heart happy) • Begin by using this colour to draw a very light line beside – not over top of – the pencil line you drew. If you go over the pencil line then the wax in the coloured pencil will seal the graphite and you will not be able to erase it.
Ribbon Shading • Once you have the outline of the ribbon established in colour pencil then you erase the graphite pencil line. • Remember the value shading practice that we did in your sketchbook and using the same technique you can shade the ribbon. • In the centre of the ribbon where the light strikes most of the surface your shading will be very light in value.
Ribbon Shading • When you are shading the parts of the ribbon where it is narrow and twisted there is less light so your value shading will be darker. • Remember to gradually build up the shading by layering the colour in different directions without extra pressure. • If it is very dark at the twisted point of your ribbon then consider using black to shade the colour.
