Hunting vs Poaching Luckily enough for me, my dad has a friend who owns a game farm in Hluhluwe. I phoned him up earlier this morning to talk to him about the rhino poaching issues in South Africa. This particular game farm owner, I won’t mention his name, has 5 rhino on his farm, none of which have been poached. Two of the five rhino are babies aged one and a half, and 2 years of age consecutively. Both of these babies are being sold in the next few months. I asked him whether he has taken any extra precautions to stop or prevent poaching on his farm. He has hired a few extra police guards that try to follow the rhinos during the day and then some extra guards to watch them at night. He does not believe that the new form of poisoning the rhino horn is effective, as the rhino still dies, due to the fact that the poachers can not tell whether the horn is poisoned or not. He also stipulated that they will be darting and surgically removing the horns of their adult rhino to prevent poaching which will harm their animals. We talked about an interesting issue regarding hunting as opposed to poaching. He said that 2 to 3 years ago, Americans were allowed to purchase hunting permits, although at a great cost. This allowed for the hunting of animals, such as rhino, to be controlled. Now, however, because they have stopped the issuing of these permits, there is an ever-increasing demand for rhino horn. The trade of horn, now functions on the black market, which has fluctuated the illegal trades. We further discussed the fact that whether we like it or not, rhinos are dying. He stated that if they brought back hunting permits maybe the demand for horn would settle, and thus it would be controlled. We both agree on the fact that this issue needs to be controlled urgently, if we would like to see the rhino live. The argument here is that there is a big difference between hunters and poachers. Hunters will shoot one, and keep the horn as a trophy, whereas poachers are killing rhino in large numbers and selling the horn on the black market. The hype around rhino horn in asia is great, and therefore more rhinos will continually be poached, until there are none left.
