Spain: Philip II mega catholic after jews/muslims expelled from Spain. Used all that silver in Americas on self/army just to have the English and Dutch crush their Golden age. England: Queen Elizabeth reigns after bloody Mary (catholic queen who tried to kill protestants). Elizabeth beloved for defeating Spain & restoring moderate form of protestant faith (called anglican). • • •

IV. The 30 Years War! • • 1) So that peace of Augsburg definitely did not work. From 1618 -1648: o In Germany all the European powers fight over Catholic & Protestant rule. o All countries except for England enter this war!! Daym!! 2) 1648 Peace of Westphalia - Ends the war, and ends the Holy Roman Empire!! Now each German State has power to conduct its own religion and foreign policy. o Leaves France in the lead! o But… wait for Louis XIV to ruin it. . .
V. The Methodist church • Forms of Protestant faith so far: o 1) Lutherans - first protestants, believe in salvation through inner change, not outside acts (like. . indulgences or crusades) o 2) Calvinists - demonstrate your pre-destined salvation since God already set up what is ahead. Called Presbyterians in America. o 3) Anglicans/Puritans - the mixed catholic/protestant faith of England (because Henry VII wanted a divorce, remember? ). Episcopalians are just Anglicans in America.
Methodist Church cont…. 4) Anabaptists - dunk people in water to be baptised, very unpopular in Europe which is why they came to America (“Baptists”) • 5) Methodists: Man named John Wesley preached to the masses in open fields and taught of a humbler way to find God. Many converted + leads to people fighting for the abolishment of Slavery,
