Revising the DHS8 Core Questionnaires Madeleine Short Fabic
Revising the DHS-8 Core Questionnaires Madeleine Short Fabic DHS-8 COR The Demographic and Health Surveys Program December 19, 2018 1
Every Five Years… At the start of each DHS contract cycle, the DHS Core Questionnaire is revised (Household, Woman’s, Man’s, and special Modules) We are at the start of the DHS-8 contract cycle and it’s been five years since the last questionnaire revision cycle began. It’s again time to consider questionnaire changes. 2
Two Goals and One Challenge Major Goals: 1) Respond to critical and emerging needs 2) Maintain data quality. Major challenge: 1) Data quality suffers as the length of the core questionnaire grows. 3
Our Challenge: Data Quality Suffers as Interview Length Increases Inconsistent in reporting: Women who spent 45+ minutes responding to the women’s questionnaire were more likely to give an inconsistent answer compared to those who spent less time, controlling for background characteristics. 4
Questionnaire Revision Process: Two Highlights As the leader of The DHS Program, USAID has the opportunity to deeply engage in the questionnaire revision process. 1) Everyone across the Agency will have the opportunity to participate 2) It is best that teams provide input as teams rather than individuals. This means that teams will need to reach internal consensus. 5
Today…. Our DHS Program colleagues will give a presentation further describing the process. – Dr. Sunita Kishor, DHS Program Director – Dr. Joanna Lowell, Senior Science Advisor – Ms. Joy Fishel, Senior Technical Advisor Thereafter, we’ll have plenty of time for discussion. 6
