Structure of the course assessment Ø Component 1: Question Paper o 30 marks, 30% of the course assessment o Set and marked by SQA Ø Component 2: Assignment o 50 marks, 35% of the course assessment o Submitted to SQA for marking Ø Component 3: Practical Activity o 50 marks, 35% of the course assessment o Marked by centre staff, subject to verification by SQA

Skills, Knowledge and Understanding Skills, knowledge and understanding for the course assessment The following provides details of skills, knowledge and understanding sampled in the course assessment: choose textiles based on their characteristics and properties, and evaluate their suitability for different purposes: o fibres: natural fibres, regenerated fibres, synthetic fibres types of fabric construction: o woven, knitted, felted, bonded explain fashion/textile trends

Skills, Knowledge and Understanding explain the fashion/textile choices of consumers: o peer pressure, celebrity/role models, online shopping, environmental issues use investigative techniques to carry out detailed investigations into given briefs interpret and develop solutions for detailed fashion/textile items to meet given briefs

Presentation 1 Question Paper

Question Paper w w The question paper will be worth 30 marks There will be 3 x 10 mark questions Each question will be themed All questions will be drawn from the skills, knowledge and understanding listed in the National 5 Fashion and Textile Technology: Course Specification w All questions will use command words from SQA’s defined list

Command words Name/state/identify/give What the candidate has to do: Ø Provide a number of items or facts that are relevant to the question. Example: Name two types of seam that would be suitable for a denim skirt.

Command words Describe What the candidate has to do: Ø Define or give an account of a number of points that relate to the question. Example: Describe four design features that would be important for a baby’s soft toy.

Explain the importance of four design features for a baby’s soft toy. The eyes should be secure so that the baby cannot get them off and swallow them.

Presentation 2 Assignment and Practical Activity

Structure of the Coursework Ø Component 2: Assignment o 50 marks, 35% of the course assessment o Submitted to SQA for marking Ø Component 3: Practical Activity o 50 marks, 35% of the course assessment o Marked by centre staff, subject to verification by SQA

Assignment and Practical Activity Stage 1: Design and Plan 1 a Identify two themes to investigate from the chosen brief. No change 2 marks

Assignment and Practical Activity 1 b Produce evidence of carrying out three investigations into themes each with a specific focus, using at least two different investigative techniques. Change: An additional investigation is required 5 marks x 3 investigations = 15 marks

Assignment and Practical Activity 1 c Present an appropriate solution for the detailed fashion/textile item, identifying and explaining seven features which relate to findings from each of the investigations. Presentation of solution 2 marks No change Explanation of features 14 marks Change: Increase in mark allocation from 8 to 14

National 5 Assignment and Practical Activity 1 d Produce a detailed plan for the making of the detailed fashion/textile item. Change: Increase in mark allocation from 3 to 4 1 e Prepare a requisition for the required textiles, components, tools and equipment Change: New section 3 marks

Stage 2: Making the item 2 a Set up, adjust and use appropriate tools and equipment correctly and according to safety guidelines 6 marks No change 2 b Identify and use an appropriate paper pattern for the detailed fashion/textile item Change: New section 3 marks

2 c: Making the detailed fashion/textile item 2 c Make and finish a detailed fashion/textile item using at least eight appropriate textile construction techniques. Quality of construction techniques demonstrated 28 marks Overall standard of the finished fashion/textile item 8 marks No change
