Goals for the Lesson I can recall the setting of the story. I can remember the sequence of events in the novel. I can create my own titles for each chapter of the novel I can understand the problem that drives the story.

A Day in the Life of a Teen in the Late Sixties The 1960’s was a decade in the United States of massive social, legal and cultural change: Civil Rights Women Rights Vietnam War movement and the Antithe End of Sexual War Movement Segregation Revolution Assassination Massive Music s of Martin The Cold War Luther King Concerts like and Robert Woodstock. Kennedy But for most teens they lived a very sheltered life. The following clip is a typical birthday on a Saturday of 15 year old male growing up at the time. He is very similar to the teens we will meet in our story.

Chapter The Cast of Our : Story The first chapter of the Wave establishes the setting for the novel and the characters. A suburban ( )פרבר high school called Gordon High in late 1960’s. We are introduced to most of characters in the novel:
Main Characters Laurie Saunders a senior (12 th grader) who has short brown hair and editor of the school newspaper the Grapevine. *She is the • Protagonist Amy Smith, Laurie’s best friend, she has long curly blonde hair and like Laurie has the best grades in her class. Ben Ross, Laurie and Amy’s History teacher who’s wife, Christy, also teaches Music to the students at Gordon High School. David Collins, a tall goodlooking boy who is captain of the football team and Laurie’s boyfriend. Robert Billings, a heavy boy and class loser who is failing Ben’s class.
Minor Characters Brian Amon, quarterback of the football team, David’s friend. Midge, Mrs. Saunders, Laurie’s mother and very involved in the community Mr. Saunders, Laurie’s father a software engineer and golf lover Alex and Carl, two members of the school newspaper that help Laurie write the paper
Chapter. Origins of the Wave 2: Ben Ross showed his 12 th grade History class a film about the Holocaust and while the students watched horrible images of starving people and piles of bodies he told them some facts. Ben explained how Hitler, a madman, rose to power and called for the destruction of the Jewish people in the Final Solution.
Chapter 2 Continued • After the movie Amy asked why didn’t anyone try to stop the Nazis since they were only 10% of the population? • Ben told the students that after the war the Germans said they didn’t know the Nazis had killed 10 million people. • Laurie then asked, “How could the Germans sit back while the Nazis slaughtered people all around them and say they didn’t know about it? ” • Mr. Ross said he really didn’t have an answer to her question. 2) Why do you think the German’s said they didn’t know about the Holocaust?
Chapter It’s Just a Piece of History 3: After history class was lunch and Laurie and David sat together waiting for their friends Amy and Brian (who is on the football team with David). Laurie wasn’t eating her food because she was upset after the movie. David ask if he could eat her food and she asked him didn’t the movie bother him? 3) Why do you think Laurie was upset and couldn’t eat but David was fine?
David responds to Laurie, “Yeah sure as something horrible that happened once, it bothers me. But it was a long time ago, Laurie. To me it’s like a piece of History. You can’t change what happened then. ” This is an important quote because it foreshadows (gives a hint of the future) what will come in our novel. Laurie says “but we shouldn’t forget it happened. ” 4) What do you think David is saying about the Holocaust? (Hint look at Laurie’s response)
Chapter The Answer is Not in a Book 4: After class Ben couldn’t get the questions of history students out of his mind. “Was the behavior of the majority of Germans during the unexplainable Nazi Regime really so inexplicable? ” So he went to the library and checked out all the books he could find about Nazi Germany and brought them home to try to find the answers for the students. 5) What was the German behavior that seemed so hard to explain?
After several hours of reading he couldn’t find any answers in the books. He wondered maybe these were questions that you could only answer if you had been there. He thought was it possible to create a similar experience for his students. “Suppose he took a period or perhaps two and tried an experiment. Just tried to give his students a sampling, a taste of what life in Nazi Germany might have been like. If he could just figure out how it could be done…he was certain it would make far more an impression than any book answer could ever make. ” 6) What was the goal of Ben’s experiment? 7) Why not just tell his students the answer?

Chapter 5: Ben Ross began his class with a lecture on the values of discipline and how different students used self-discipline or the discipline of a group in order to achieve their goals. Ben said “suppose I could prove to you that you can create through discipline. ” This got the students interested and them that discipline begins with proper sitting position. straight, knees forward chin up. Ben pointed to Robert as the class to look at on how to sit properly. Strength Through Discipline power Ben showed Back example for 8) What is self-discipline in your opinion, how can it make you feel powerful?
After practicing this with the class he moved on to practicing how to come into class and sit in the proper position in their seats until their students were able to cut their time in half. Next been introduced three more rules to the class: 1. Everyone must have pens, pencils and paper for note taking. 2. When asking or answering a question student must stand by their desk. 3. The first words when answering or asking a question must be Mr. Ross. 9) If sitting and finding their seats with self-discipline was designed to make the students feel powerful what do you think
Chapter Strength Through Community 6: § The next day Ben was surprised when he entered his class all of his students were silent sitting in the proper position and following all the rules from the previous lesson. So Ben wrote up on the board STRENGTH THROUGH COMMUNITY. • “Community is the bond between people who work and struggle together for a common goal. ” “Like discipline in order to understand community you have to experience it. ” 10) Make a guess what do you think Mr. Ross will have the students do in order that they feel the power of community?
§ Ben Ross then had the class repeat the two mottos together over and over until every student was standing beside their desk saying out loud STRENGTH THROUGH DISCIPLINE, STRENGTH THROUGH COMMUNITY. § Then Mr. Ross told the class that the symbol for their new community would be a Wave because it represents movement and impact. This community will also have a salute and every time another Wave member sees another member each must give the salute and say the two mottos. Chapter 7: Laurie Tells Her Parents about the Wave excited to tell her parents Laurie was about the events that had occurred in Mr. Ross history class over the past two days. She said the whole class was different. Everyone felt equal and a part of something. Even the weaker students like Robert were participating. |Laurie’s father supported the idea of the Wave, “I am for anything that will get these kids today to listen” 13) According to Laurie how has her history class changed?
Mrs. Saunders, Laurie’s mom, did like what she heard about the Wave. She said it sounded to militaristic and that Mr. Ross sounded like he was manipulating the students. Mrs. Saunders reminds Laurie, “We’ve always raised you to be an individual” Laurie and her father disagreed with her and said that it was good that Mr. Ross was teaching the students how to cooperate better. Laurie assured her mom that Mr. Ross knows what he is doing and is not trying to manipulate them. 14) Why is Mrs. Ross concerned?
Chapter The Yellow Cards 8: By the third lesson Mr. Ross who usually wore casual cloths was wearing a blue suite. As his students sat at their desk in the proper position. Mr. Ross was passing down the aisles giving the students yellow cards. Mr. Ross announced that the yellow cards were membership cards in the Wave. If you flip over the card some of you will see you have a red X. Those who have a X our monitors, who’s job is to report on any Wave member who does not follow the rules. 15) How has Mr. Ross changed his dress?
