The gentiles, or outer court party, under ecclesiastical titles (Popes, cardinals, etc) have enjoyed the emoluments and honours of the state, and have with one accord for ages persecuted and destroyed the true saints on the charge of heresy. These ecclesiastical gentiles of the outer court have been allowed to have the upper hand everywhere, and to subject to severe rabdos discipline the poor and little flock in whom The Father, by the truth, dwells in his temple. It is only for a time: the down-treading is limited by the forty two months which we have the happiness of knowing are now in the past. Deliverance is at the door. (R. Roberts 13 Lectures page 87)

Pope Boniface VIII (1294 -1303). Boniface insisted upon ridiculous claims over all temporal rulers and said, "We declare, state, define and pronounce that for every human creature to be subject to the Roman pope is altogether necessary for salvation. " The very arrogance of these papal claims, however, irritated many rulers and provoked violent reactions. Boniface was captured by Philip the Fair of France, and he was so badly treated that he died within a month. Pope Gregory VII & Emperor Henry IV (1075) Gregory summoned Henry to Rome as if he were a feudal vassal. Henry refused to go and he persuaded a German Council to depose the pope. The pope in turn threatened excommunication. Henry called the Council of Worms and denounced papal authority. Henry was excommunicated an anathema pronounced against his subjects. No one could or would have any dealings with Henry, or give him food or shelter, for fear of eternal torments. Ultimately, Henry was forced to make his peace with. Gregory. Barefooted and dressed as a humble penitent, he was compelled to stand for three days in the papal courtyard in the snow. On the fourth day the pontiff agreed to receive him. He pled for clemency, confessed his fault, made his humble submission at the feet of the pope, and received absolution. This was a great triumph for the papacy. However, Henry received back his position and power, and was able to drive Gregory VII out of Rome. In the end Henry won the last round. Gregory died in exile and said dejectedly, "I have loved righteousness and hated iniquity, therefore I die in exile. "

The Pope skilfully chooses new saints Pope Gregory XV is proving a skilful politician. His choice of new saints shows careful attention for the temporal needs of the Catholic Church in its struggle against Protestantism. Four prominent Jesuits, including their founder, Ignatius Loyola, are among the new saints. It is the Jesuits above all, who have spearheaded the Catholic Chronicle of the fight against the protestants. (1622) World. P. 585

A full amsesty is granted to all who took up arms during the wars of religion, and 100 towns are assigned to the Hugeonots as “towns of refuge”. (Chronicle, Page 558)
