Multipart cataloging • German and American terminology are incongruent, data are incompatible. • USMARC bibliographic data are found incomplete for multiparts 11/25/2020

Why bother? • Bibliographic data partially uncontrolled • Bibliographic data for volumes/parts not shared • Cataloging decisions influenced by outside factors (classification, acquisitions) • OPAC retrieval imprecise/inconsistent • Interlibrary loan uncertainties • Inefficient international exchange Each of these factors means more work in every library 11/25/2020 REUSE Task Group

Changes for more efficiency and improved exchange • Work-oriented rather than item-centric approach • AACR 2 and USMARC have all the necessary features • “Work records“ already exist, just need to be “activated“ • Unified model for multiparts, sets, and containers 11/25/2020 REUSE Task Group

Conclusions • No new rules or format elements necessary • Comprehensive linking technique can be implemented with very little effort • Data completion possible with German data, after introducing links and subrecords • Sum total: Less work, more effect 11/25/2020 REUSE Task Group
