Background Cities or areas within cities can become rundown over time and in order to reverse negative trends like people, businesses and shops leaving cities, the government or individuals and businesses need to invest (£’s) in these areas. In European cities, it has been central areas (CBD and inner city areas) like London Docklands or Canterbury’s Eastgate (now Whitefriars area) that have needed to be regenerated and renewed. E. g. London Canary Wharf, Stratford or Canterbury’s Whitefriars developments.
Regeneration – work with what’s there already Renewal – knock it down and start again

What is urban renewal? Changing the urban area to achieve growth and prosperity to create a sustainable future (hopefully). Often to reverse negative population and economic trends. This may involve building offices, parks, knocking down buildings, renovating old warehouses and making them into homes. Flag ship projects like the London Olympics which hopes to renew the Stratford area of East London (same in Barcelona when they had the Olympics). Developing new transport (DLR and jubilee line extension) and infrastructure like schools, hospitals and retail (Westfield, Stratford).
