Resume Tips
Resume Writing Tips 1. Ditch the objective statement 2. Use a reverse chronological order for your employment history a. Your work history should be applicable to the position you are applying for 3. Make use of bullet points to break down chunks of text 4. Quantify the results of your achievements a. Ex. : “. . . improved member participation by 50%” 5. List relevant qualifications, awards, and skills in their own sections 6. Plain, black & white resumes are just fine a. Make sure the reader is not distracted by loud colors or fonts
Resume Breakdown 1. Education a. Clearly portray anticipated graduation date, GPA, and program of study 2. Experience a. Only include experience relevant to the job you are applying for 3. Leadership 4. Skills a. Highlight your software skills or other areas of expertise you may have pertaining to the job field b. Ex: Microsoft Office, ALOHA, Aspen, PSV sizing, communication 5. Awards a. Add personal achievements that make you stand out b. Ex: scholarships, awards from AICh. E, etc.

Resume Breakdown - Experience ● Do not list jobs that lasted less than 3 months (unless they were internships) ● You want to highlight growth and learning, not to fill up a blank page ○ ○ Quality over quantity! Talk about experience that is relevant to your degree/desired job ● If you have not had an internship yet, emphasize jobs or skills that demonstrate your ability to thrive in a work environment ○ Examples: manager of a restaurant, math tutor, research assistant ● Indicate job responsibilities and achievements under each position ● Do not go into too much detail, you can explain it in your interview
Resume Breakdown - Leadership In this section, emphasize your leadership abilities by highlighting ● ● ● Soft skills Ability to adapt quickly Growth within an organization Communication skills Accomplishments
The Elevator Pitch ● This is what you use to “sell yourself” to employers when you are talking with them at a career fair ● Should not last more than 30 seconds ● Let them know your name, your major, what you are looking for, and anything else that would make you a memorable candidate ● Do practice but try not to sound rehearsed ○ This is just another way to showcase your soft skills to employers
Interview Tips
The Interview - Etiquette ● Always come prepared to an interview ○ Do your research on the company & job you are applying for ● Dress formal, but don’t overdo it ○ ○ For guys - button down shirt, tie and slacks For girls - slacks/skirt and a nice top ● Bring additional resumes or notepad in a portfolio case ● Speak with confidence and make eye contact in your interview
STAR Method Employers like asking behavioral questions because you are less likely to exaggerate your answers and they are a good indication of how an employee would act in the future. Example STAR Questions: “Tell me about a time you showed initiative and took the lead. ” “Can you describe a stressful situation and how you handled it? ” “Give me an example of a goal you achieved. ”
STAR Method ● Situation ○ Describe the context ● Task ○ Provide details on your responsibilities ● Action ○ Show you took responded ● Result ○ Explain the impact you made or the lessons you learned
Answering the STAR Question ● Use first person pronouns - keep the focus on you ● Before going into your interview, have pre-thought out responses prepared, but don’t rehearse them too much ● Pick your answers according to the job you are interviewing for ○ ○ Each job description might entail different responsibilities Cater STAR questions to fit each job ● Think of experiences in various areas (ex. School, your job, organizations)
Other Tips ● Make an account on Handshake ○ Most employers will ask you to apply on Handshake even after you have secured an interview ● Research the companies you will be applying for beforehand ○ Know at least one thing about their company/plant
