YOU DECIDE Teasing? Conflict? Bullying?

Preventing Teasing Ø Develop empathy and perspective-taking o Asking “how does it feel to be made fun of? ” Ø Teach the difference between “having fun” and “making fun” Ø Challenge popular culture/media Ø Rules and consequences for teasing o Family Pledge

Challenging Pop Culture/Media Ø Monitor TV, movies, magazines, etc. Ø Watch with your children and question events, do a reality test Ø Don’t let pop culture have the last word! Ø Review ground rules for social networking (Facebook, etc. ) Ø Become tech savvy!

Family Pledge Ø Create your family pledge together Ø List behaviors that will convey love and respect (no put-downs!) Ø Discuss what might be challenging Ø Discuss how to help one another Ø Decide how broken promises will be addressed (Apology of Action) Ø Check in about the pledge periodically

Apology of Action Ø Ask your child to reflect on how his/her behavior has impacted another Ø Do not require child to make a verbal apology Ø Give your child the responsibility to “right” the wrong through an action (show me) Ø Check back about what happened

Responding to Teasing Ø Pretend you don’t hear it & disagree in your mind Ø Give a “you’re crazy” look and walk away Ø Use an assertive statement o I don’t like to be called that. Please stop. Ø Sort of agree (That’s possible, but…) Ø Claim it as a strength (My outfit is awesome, thanks) Ø Join another group Don’t boomerang!

6 Ways to Handle Conflict Ø Accommodate- give in Ø Avoid- don’t address Ø Compete- fight for what you want Ø Compromise- each person gets some of what they want Ø Collaborate- work together so that everyone gets what they want Ø Appeal to a 3 rd Party- another person helps or decides

Skills for Conflict Resolution Ø Stop & Think Ø Assertive Language Ø Listening Ø Apologizing Ø Brainstorming Ø Choose a Solution

Talking About Conflict Ø How do you feel about what happened? Ø How do you think the other person feels? Ø What would you like to see happen? Ø What could you do to solve the problem? Ø Let’s practice what you will say/do. . . Ø Who can you go to at school for help?

Talking About Bullying Ø Listen empathetically and calmly Ø Offer praise and recognition Ø Find out about your child’s specific concerns Ø Rehearse words and actions Ø Encourage your child to report Ø Contact the school

Teaching Students to be Upstanders Ø Model and teach empathy Ø Discuss upstander behaviors and language Ø Role play bullying scenarios- practice upstander behaviors and language Ø Develop help strategies Ø Enlist support from other bystanders Ø Get help from an adult; report Ø Support- buddy, empathize, etc.

Upstander Behavior Ø Respects people, even those who are ‘different’ Ø Befriends students who are new to the group Ø Refrains from teasing, gossip and bullying Ø Uses humor, assertion and social influence to discourage others from teasing & bullying Ø Speaks out when others are mis-treated Ø Reports situations to adults and gets help

Upstander Language Said to the teaser/bully: Ø Some people might think that’s funny, but I don’t/it’s not. Ø You’re going too far. Ø Not cool! Ø It’s not ok with me when _____ feels upset. Ø Stop (name the behavior) now. Ø Do you really think that’s a good idea? I don’t.

Upstander Language Said to the target: Ø It’s not ok with me when _____ does that. Ø Come play with us. Ø You don’t deserve that treatment. Ø I’m sorry that happened. Do you want help? Ø Have you told a teacher about this? I think you should. I’ll go with you.
