Respiratory System Lesson Goal To describe the structure
Respiratory System
Lesson Goal: • To describe the structure and function of the respiratory system • To understand how the circulatory and respiratory systems work together in the human body. • Score yourself Scoring Guide: (Out of 5) 1 2 – I do not know anything about… - I know I’ve heard about… but I need a refresher 3 – I remember a few things about… 4 – I know a lot about… 5 – I could teach… to another student
APK! What is the main role of the circulatory system? What is the main role of the respiratory system? T-P-S! Why do you think it’s important for these two body systems to work together?
Mouth Nose Alveoli Respiratory System
The Upper Respiratory Tract
The Lower Respiratory Tract
Why do we need to BREATHE? ? • Cells need oxygen to release the energy they need to live. To give cells this oxygen, your body needs to collect oxygen from the air and deliver it to every cell. What does oxygen combine with to form energy in our cells? • Oxygen is combined with glucose, to produce carbon dioxide, water and energy. The respiration that occurs in cells is called cellular respiration
How do we breathe?
Process of Breathing: Pressure Gradient Inhalation/Exhalation: air in/air out n Relaxed state: diaphragm and intercostal muscles relaxed n Inhalation: diaphragm contracts, pulling muscle down, chest wall elevates and expands volume of chest, lowering pressure in lungs, pulling in air n Exhalation: muscles relax, diaphragm resumes dome shape, chest to lowers, increasing pressure in lungs, release of air
Four Respiration Processes 1. 2. 3. 4. Respiratory Breathing: air in to and out of lungs tract External respiration: gas exchange between air and Lungs/Capillaries blood Internal respiration: gas exchange between blood Capillaries/ and tissues Tissues (cells) Cellular respiration: produce energy for the body & carbon dioxide as waste Cells Mitochondria
Alveoli close up
Why is a Capillary only 1 cell thick? • How is this different to the other blood vessels? What is this diagram showing?
Respiratory System Disorders n Reduced air flow: asthma, emphysema, bronchitis n Infections: pneumonia, tuberculosis, botulism n Other: Lung cancer, Congestive heart failure, Cystic fibrosis
Match the following respiratory structures with their function TRACHEA Filers, warms and humidifies the air EPIGLOTTIS Removes foreign particles from the lungs NOSE The site of gas exchange CILIA Carries air to and from lungs NOSE Prevents food from entering trachea
Questions, Questions 1. Propose why it is better to breathe through the nose than the mouth 2. What part of the respiratory system is affected by the medical condition bronchitis 3. Propose reasons why a person breathes faster when: a) They are running b) They are frightened
