RESPIRATORY SYSTEM contains organs that supply your blood
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM- contains organs that supply your blood with oxygen. Oxygen is essential to life. Oxygen is brought into the body by breathing and carbon dioxide is taken out.
Mouth and nose Air enters and leaves though the nose an mouth. Air is warmed and moistened in the nose. Hair and mucus in the nose trap dust and dirt from the air.
Air next travels to: Pharynx- tube like passageway at the top of the throat that receives air, food and liquids from the mouth and nose. Epiglottis- flap of tissue at the end of the pharynx that stops food and liquid from entering the respiratory system.
Air next travels to: The LARYNX- upper part of the respiratory system, contains the vocal cords. Also called the voice box. The vocal cords are two thick folds of tissue that vibrate as air passes over them. Allows a person to speak.
Air next travels to: The TRACHEA- a passageway in your throat that takes air into and out of your lungs. Branches into tow narrower tubes called BRONCHI- two passageways that branch from the trachea, one to each lung. In the lungs the bronchi continue to branch off into smaller tubes.
Air next travels to: LUNGS- two large organs that exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. Breathing in brings oxygen to the lungs Blood circulates through the lungs exchanging carbon dioxide for oxygen. Breathing out removes carbon dioxide and other waste materials from the body.
Breathing starts with the: DIAPHRAGM- a large, domed shaped muscle below the lungs that expands and compresses the lungs, enabling breathing. When you breathe in the diaphragm contracts and the lungs can expand. When you breathe out the diaphragm expands and pushes on the lungs. Breathing involves both involuntary and voluntary muscle movements? HOW?
Tobacco smoke, chemicals and air pollution all can damage the parts of your respiratory system. Tobacco use may not cause all the issues, but it can make them worse.
Respiratory Illnesses Illness Causes Symptoms Colds, Flu Viruses Congestion, runny nose, watery eyes, coughing, sneezing Bronchitis Viruses, bacteria Coughing and fatigue due to mucus blocking the bronchi and bronchioles slowing air movement. Pneumonia Viruses, bacteria Difficulty breathing due to fluid in the alveoli that slows oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange. Asthma Dust, smoke, pollen, pollution Difficulty breathing due to swollen airways and increased mucus Emphysema Smoking Coughing, fatigue, loss of appetite, ands weight loss due to destruction of alveoli Lung Cancer Smoking Coughing, difficulty breathing, chest pain
Avoid Tobacco use and smokers. Take care of your body Give your body time to heal and recover when you are ill. Drink plenty of fluids Be Physically active regularly Eat a healthy diet Pay attention to the weather Manage Stress Protect yourself from infections Washing hands.
