Major functions of the respiratory system Respiration takes place in the respiratory organs called lungs. The passage of air into the lungs to supply the body with oxygen is know as inhalation the passage of air out of the lungs to expel carbon dioxide is known as exhalation.
Diagram
Breathing process Molecules of oxygen & carbon dioxide are passively exchanged by diffusion between the gaseous external environment & blood. This exchange process occurs in the alveoli air sacs in the lungs.
Body system works with other systems… Circulatory system: the circulatory system is an organism that permits blood & lymph circulation to transport nutrients. Nervous system: Is the part of an animal body that coordinates its voluntdry actions and transmits signals between different pairs of its body. Tells the respiratory system when to breath more orless.
5 fun facts 1. an average person breathes in the equivalent of 13 pints of air every minute. 2. approximetly, 1500 miles ofair ways are presents in human lungs. 3. 300 million alveoli may be found in a pair of human lungs. 4. in human beings, right lung is larger than left lung for accommodating heart. 5. “laughter is the best medicine” may have some truth it helps to boost the immune system.
2 Major Diseases 1. Emphysema, progresive destruction of the air sacks in the lungs and loss of respiratory membrane for oxygen exchange. The bane of long term ofsmokers. 2. Atelectasis, a collapsed lung. Literally, “an imperfect expansion” in greek.
