Respected Sir, Please find attached herewith the study material created by me. Details of the study material is as follows: Title : Sugar industry Name of Teacher - Mr. Salunke S. T. The study material is useful to the students of Subject : Industrial chemistry Course/Class : T. Y. B. Sc Semester : IV(second term) Paper No : CH-345 Topic : Sugar industry Source : Manali prakashan.
Que. Discuss the utilization of by-products of sugar industry. Ans- There are two important by products of sugar industries 1. Bagasse 2. Molasses
1. Bagasse: It contains 46 -52%moisture, 43 -52%fibre, and 2 -6%soluble solid. A large quantity of bagasse is produced during the cane sugar processing and it finds application in many areas. A. Direct utilization as fuel The bagasse is used – i. for the generation of high or medium pressure stream for electricity generation. ii. as a fuel for the furnace in sugar factories. iii. as fuel substitute for charcoal or wood used for cooking purpose of open fires. B. In manufacture of bagasse charcoal It on distructive distillation gives charcoal, combustible gases, methyl alcohol, acetic acid and tar.
C. As animal feed bagasse, it's mixture with mollases and the ammoniated bagasse are used for feeding animals D. In manufacture of methane and producer gas is made by burning to bagasse ash by means of a mixture of air and steam, the resulting gas being a mixture of burnt and combustible gas. E. In manufacture of fibrous products. F. As soil conditioner The compost of bagasse contain potassium 0. 3%, P 2 O 5 0. 05%, nitrogen 0. 4% and hence used as natural fertilizer.
2. Molasses : It is the residual mother liquor left in the crystallization process of sugar, from which no additional sugar can be recovered economically, commonly called black strap molasses. It contains a significant quantity of both sucrose and reducing sugar (glucose and fructose). The major uses of molasses are – i. As animals feed ii. Fermentation into rum. iii. Compressed yeast. iv. organic chemicals like acetone, citric acid, butanol v. Edible syrup etc.
