Important things to remember: n n § The DVD contains four very individual and personal accounts of life experience Each person’s story must be respected Do not try to ‘change’ the individual’s story by over analysing or questioning them, but rather learn from them and enhance your understanding of what you do in your personal or work life and how it impacts on others. Listen and respond in relation to the future for how you do your work not in relation to changing the stories. Questions to consider – • • • 2/20/2021 What issues does this raise for you in how you do your work or live your life? How can it change the way you work or live your life? How can/should each of these life accounts influence decision-making and policy direction at government, board, and management levels? "Bungee Jumping, Lawyers and Love. . . Stories about Life" 5

Rights, Choice & Responsibility cont. n Risk “Is most commonly held to mean ‘hazard’ or something to be avoided. But it has another face – that of opportunity. Improving public services requires innovation – seizing new opportunities and managing the risks involved. In this context risk is defined as uncertainty of outcome, whether positive opportunity or negative threat, of actions and events. It is the combination of likelihood and impact, including perceived importance. ” HM Treasury Report UK 2/20/2021 "Bungee Jumping, Lawyers and Love. . . Stories about Life" 7
Rights, Choice & Responsibility cont. n 2/20/2021 “People have a right to control their own lives by making their own decisions, advocating for themselves and having the capacity to influence public policy makers. To achieve this status of full citizenship, people with disabilities need to assume leadership roles, be engaged politically and participate in policy making bodies”. The role of the trainer or facilitator n 2/20/2021 Facilitate healthy debate and discussion whilst also considering policy implications. Discussion points The following questions are just a starting point in relation to potential issues that may be raised from viewing the individual stories – § § 2/20/2021 What rights do individual’s have when there are ‘risks’ (perceived or real) involved that prevent them participating fully in community life? How do current Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Legislation and associated policies support or limit a person’s ability to self determine? Do they result in restrictions on an individual’s capacity to exercise choice and control in the way that their bodies or living circumstances are controlled? How & Why? How do you build capacity for people with disabilities to lead and participate fully in community life? "Bungee Jumping, Lawyers and Love. . . Stories about Life" 14
