RESIDENTIAL PLUMBING SYSTEMS (WATER SUPPLY) APPLICATIONS OF TECHNOLOGY
HOW DO WE USE WATER IN OUR HOMES? Bathing Toilets Cleaning Food preparation Cooling Fire protection Drinking water = Potable water
WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM The Romans are well known for their public water supply and waste water systems. However, except for the wealthy, most access points to the systems were located outside of buildings. Aqueducts transported water from water sources through lead pipes to limited users The highest quality water was use for drinking fountains while lower quality water was used in public baths and latrines.

WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM WATER SOURCES Aquifers – Underground bodies of water Surface Water § Lakes § Rivers § Reservoirs
WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM WATER TREATMENT Water is treated to remove and control the following items: §Algae §Iron §Suspended solids and particles §Salt §Bacteria
WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM STORAGE TANK Water is pumped to storage to tanks to be stored until needed. Most storage tanks are elevated to create one pressure in the distribution system. Pressure is measured in psi (pounds per square inch). 1 psi = 2. 31 feet
WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM DISTRIBUTION TANKS Water distribution pipes are created from the following materials: §Reinforced concrete §Thermoplastic §Ductile Iron In older systems distribution pipes were made from cast-iron or asbestos cement.
WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM Network of pipes that transport hot and cold potable water under pressure Fixtures Branch Lines – Hot or cold water pipes that serve only one or two fixtures Water Heater Trunk Lines – Hot or cold water pipes that serve many fixtures
WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM Water Main – Supply pipe installed and maintained by a public entity and on public property Water Service – Pipe from the water main to the building supply pipes E C I V MAI SER N
WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM Valve – A fitting used to Meter – Measures the amount of control water flow (located water transported through water next to the meter) service
