PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE • Topic Sentence • Detail 1 – Should refer to topic sentence. • Detail 2 – Should link #1 to new information. • Detail 3 – Should link #2 to new information. • Conclusion – Summarize and restate And/or make reference to the next paragraph’s topic (transition).
Topic (General) TECHNOLOGY 1. Topic Sentence (More Specific) Technology is used throughout the world, and is becoming a necessity in most countries. 2. Supporting Details that relate to your topic sentence (Most specific) 1. Technology is used in social media 2. Families & Friends rely on technology to communicate. 3. Businesses rely on technology to compete in the economy. 3. Concluding Sentence to bring it all together. (General) Technology has now become a major component of people connecting throughout the world.
READ AND LABEL THE PARAGRAPH BELOW BY: TS (CHANGE TO RED CS (CHANGE TO BLUE) Many scientists agree that temperatures around the world are slowly rising and this global warming could mean trouble for cold loving penguins Penguins are having trouble finding food and places to live. The Emperor and Adelie species population has dropped in half in recent years. The main problem is the disappearing sea ice which contains kirll, food for the penguins, and a place to nest. All scientists do not agree if the causes of global warming are a natural occurrence or if it is due to polluting. Consequently, we might just help the penguins if we conserve!
CREATING A TOPIC SENTENCE 1. Look at Topic of Writing. 1. Example: Technology 2. Title: How Technology Affects People’s Lives 2. Write a general statement about that topic that is related to what you will be writing about. Remember, a TS is DIFFERENT than the TITLE of the paper… Example Topic Sentences: A. Technology affects people’s lives in many ways. B. We would be lost without technology in modern life. C. Technology can have either a positive or negative influence on our lives.

Will you be doing research of your own? Any cited quotes that support your thesis statement The steps you will take to prove your thesis
PRESENTATIONS Public Speaking Presentation Rubric: CONTENT: 3 slides / Material was presented clearly and was well written ACCURACY: spelling/punctuation/grammar/ VOLUME/TONE/PACING/FLUENCY: spoke loud / clear/ with appropriate enthusiasm BODY LANGUAGE/EYE CONTACT: Presenter looks at audience, is relaxed & confident (arms are unfolded!) RESEARCH: Researcher was well prepared, knowledgeable about their topic, and has sufficient information to present on this topic.
