What is Expository Writing? n Writing to inform. n There are several types: n How-to n Cause and Effect n Problem and solution n Compare and Contrast n Research writing
What are primary sources? n Original records of the past. n Ex: Journals, letters, photographs, government documents, periodicals (newspapers, magazines), etc.
What are secondary sources? n Accounts of the past written by someone looking back on an event. n Ex: Textbooks, encyclopedias, books, websites, etc.
How do I record information to use in a paper or project? n There are three ways to record information from a source. n. Quote n. Paraphrase n. Summarize
How do I Paraphrase? n Paraphrase the source by using your own words to tell what the source says. n Use about the same number of words as the source does.
How Do I Summarize ? n Summarize the source by recording only the most important ideas in your own words. n Use fewer words than the source does.
How Do I Quote? n Quote the source by copying the important phrase or sentence word for word. n Enclose the copied words in quotation marks.
When should I Quote a source? n n Quote only when you cannot restate the idea in the source as clearly, vividly, or forcefully as the source does. Most of your notes should be summaries and paraphrases.
Documenting Your Work Plagiarism: presenting someone else’s ideas or research – even if you reword it – as your own. n Internal Citation: documentation that occurs within a paper to give credit to other authors. n Footnote: a note at the bottom of a page explaining something in the text. n Paraphrasing: restating an author’s idea in different words. n
Recording Sources n n Bibliography: A list of sources of a research paper, including full bibliographic references for each source the writer CONSULTED (looked at) while conducting research. Works Cited: A list of sources of a research paper, including full bibliographic references for each source the writer NAMED (specifically quoted) in the body of the paper.
