Product Development Processes From the Intranet employees from Los Alamos National Lab can find information about new technologies being developed within the lab and at remote sites such as Lawrence Livermore Laboratory in California or Rocky Flats in Colorado!
Communication Processes • Newsletters as far away as Washington DC • Bulletins from every department (Environmental Restoration, WIPP, Department of Defense, Department of Energy etc. ) • News regarding commutes from Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Espanola • Chat rooms to discuss everything from laser optics to security

The use of the Intranet at Los Alamos National Lab has provided: • Fast, accurate communication • Direct communication from supervisors, Directors in Washington DC, Secretary of Energy etc. • Employee empowerment • Reduction in paper work • Reduction in costs • Consistency in forms and procedures
Challenges they faced in implementing an Intranet system • Security : Too many web editors within the lab had access to the servers and were making changes without proper authority. • Tracking of original documents prior to security problem
Conclusion • The Intranet at Los Alamos National Lab is an extensive communication system. It resides behind a recently implemented firewall. All HIGHLY sensitive information is not available on the Intranet and is kept on CDs. Those CDs are viewed on computers not connected to the Intranet.
