Research Presentation Directions Follow the instructions on this document to complete your Research Project Presentation. You will submit this Powerpoint to your Teacher/CRA via Drop. Box. Please keep in mind the following things before beginning: • ALL SENSITIVE OR PROTECTED HEALTH INFORMATION MUST BE APPROVED BY WVU-IRB. (example: blood pressure, weight, sex, drug use, etc. ). • ANY RESEARCH ON VERTEBRATE ANIMALS MUST BE APPROVED BY WVU- IACUC. • ANY SURVEYS MUST BE APPROVED BY YOUR CRA BEFORE BEGINNING THE PROJECT. Survey projects must include interventions, not just surveys. Surveys used for background information or justification for project also HAVE to be approved before they are given out. • Delete all guide slides and words before you submit your final presentation.

Important Dates Research Presentation Original Doc Students/teachers submit Doc 1 on October 15. 1 Return of Doc CRAs will return Doc 1 with comments no latter than November 3 rd. 1 Revisions Begins when your CRA returns Doc 1 until Doc 1 is approved. Revisions will continue. All revisions must be complete BEFORE January 15. Approved Doc 1 All projects methods and/or surveys must be approved BEFORE January 15. Failure to do so will result in a formal letter sent home from your CRA and field site. You will also have to appear in front of your Local Governing Board. Final Presentation Final presentation must be APPROVED by HSTA teacher and submitted before your symposium date. Presentations are due to your CRA by the Monday before the first scheduled Symposium. If presentations are not received by your CRA by this deadline, your project’s score will be counted as a 0 towards the final awards. Symposium Dates – TBA Symposium dates are pending approval from schools and could be held on the following weekends: • April 30 • May 7 • May 14

Grading • CRAs will grade Doc 1 from October 15 to January 15 –

Grading • CRAs will grade Doc 1 from October 15 to January 15 – Title, observation, justification, research question, hypothesis, variables, procedure, and reference list • Must have 22/27 points by January 15 – If under 22 points at that date - you, your LGB and teacher will be notified that you have 10 days (from the date the email is sent) to work on your Doc 1 to bring it up to 22 points – If, after 10 days, score is still under 22 points, you will be dismissed from the program

• At Symposium, judges will grade results, data analysis, conclusion, overall presentation, and powerpoint etiquette • Must have 12/15 points to pass – Failure to achieve 12 points at Symposium will result in you re-presenting to your LGB • Overall Symposium score will be the sum of the points from the CRAs and the judges

Observation/Statement of Problem • Problem statement expresses an understanding of the problem & how to solve it. – What is the problem you are trying to address? – Why is this a problem? – Tell us about your idea for a project and how it connects to the problem statement? Your project idea should set out to solve or better understand the problem. • Describe what you have observed in your community and explain why it is important to address this problem. – Why is your topic important to your community?

Justification/Background Research • Previous background research on observation explained • Research referenced using at least four in text APA citations • Two of in-text APA citations come from academic sources • Background research should lead you into your research question. – This section should be 2 or more slides.

Research Question • Question aligns w/ problem statement& clarifies intent of experimental design and procedure. – Your question must align with your observation – Your question must be based on your research/justification – Your question must be testable. You must be able to answer the question with your project and research. • If your variables, hypothesis and procedures do not match your research question, you may not receive any points for those categories (research question, variables, hypothesis and procedures).

Hypothesis • Based on your background research, what do you think is going to

Hypothesis • Based on your background research, what do you think is going to happen in your experiment? • Explain the relationship between the independent and dependent variables • (How will the dependent variable be affected by changes in the independent variable? ). • State a null hypothesis

Procedure (Easy to understand) • • This could be 2 or more slides Explain type of research project: intervention, prevalence, longitudinal, or experimental – If your project includes an intervention, the intervention must be clearly detailed – If your project includes a survey, provide all survey materials that you will use in your project – If your project is experimental, provide the number of trials for each replication • List your procedures step by step – Make sure that someone reading the procedures will be able to complete the project exactly the same way that you do – This should be very specific • • • Safety precautions should be included Include a description about how changes will be made to the independent variable, as well as how the dependent variable will be measured Provide a copy of your data collection sheet Describe how you will collect data and how you will analyze the data Try to involve community members in developing how you will solve the problem

Results If the results, data analysis, and conclusions do not match the research question, you will FAIL • Appropriate data presented (data matches research questions) • Well labeled graphs, tables /charts displaying the raw data – Remember to use descriptive analysis to showcase raw data • Graphs and charts explained

Conclusion • Summarizes results • Explains relationship between data and hypothesis (data supports hypothesis or data supports null hypothesis) • Discusses limitations of project – The limitations of the study are those characteristics of design or methodology that impacted or influenced the application or interpretation of the results of your study. They are the constraints on generalizability and utility of findings that are the result of the ways in which you chose to design the study and/or the method used to establish internal and external validity. Keep in mind that acknowledgement of a study's limitations is an opportunity to make suggestions for further research.

Reminders for Symposium • You will be given points for overall presentation for the following: – Speaking slowly and clearly – Not reading your slides word for word – No spelling and grammar errors • You will also be given points for your overall use of powerpoint including: – Background color/animation easy to watch – Text size and font consistency – Text highlights main points instead of narrates everything
