Audience Analysis: - - in the audience I noticed that the two most popular genres are horror and action. For the most part in horror the audience had a wide agreement of serious, suspenseful events for the film opening. For example, a murder scene. While in action they were quite different. As one student wanted to see or hear dramatic emotion and music while the other wanted some sort of fight scene. I also seemed to pick students and people who liked random genres. Like indie or comedy. For the most part they all wanted some sort of action that established the genre type, so you know from the beginning what kind of movie you are watching. The audience also liked the plots of all genres no matter the genre. At least for the most part. This lets my group and I know how to fully establish the opening.
Notes on Film Opening: Black Panther: - Voice over: father telling son a story Establishing shot of meteor hitting Earth Non-diegetic sounds: drums/ traditional music Diegetic sounds: movement of visuals, clashing, fighting, etc. Lighting was dark, purple/blue tint, gloomy Goes from a story to a flashback, where the music goes from “traditional” to “modern” hip-hop Flashback ends in sadness/death/ mystery
Notes on Film Opening: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: - Begins as a black screen before moving into an establishing shot of a farm Non-diegetic music that turns to diegetic as characters begin singing Various medium shots of characters to establish close romantic relationships Lighting is warm, bright, yellow tinted Flashback, that quickly transitions to the real time. Music changes into dark, menacing. Lighting is darker even with the technology glowing, showing a darker and more serious setting
Notes on Film Opening: The Dark Knight: - Wide shot of buildings, then zoom into the window to begin action Non-Diegetic eerie music Colors/lighting is dull, a lot of beige, brown, etc Heightened diegetic sounds of actions done by characters to show possible importance Characters wear dark colors, masks Begins with robbery of bank focusing on main villain
Conclusion: Film Openings - - All three film openings that i watched had non-diegetic music. The only difference was that one, Guardians of the Galaxy, had the music turned into diegetic music but then had more music that continued being non-diegetic. Plus the songs were also different with what type. Some were more somber, eerie, scary to say the least while the rest were more light hearted or setting the mood. Two of three had flashbacks to either establish the story (Black Panther) or to give an extra mystery to the plot (Guardians of the Galaxy). The Dark Knight had a strange opening which would be seen as a flashback but at the same time it isn’t fully clear.
Conclusion: Film Openings - - When the Genre Superhero comes to mind, it’s usually something full of action yet still light hearted. However all the film openings I analyzed started somber, gloomy, or just upsetting overall. Be it with a death, dangerous fight scene, or a robbery with multiple deaths. Yet this doesn't make you want to immediately turn off your device and never watch the rest of the movie, it actually establishes an interest and curiosity to see what the rest of the movie might offer. All three movies also did an amazing job is establishing who or what importance the characters had in that movie. For example, in Black Panther they had the king of Wakanda come in in his suit with guards and all. In the Dark Knight we knew they were antigonists with their masks and outfits. And in Guardians of the galaxy they also had outfits that showed who they were and they were fighting a monster.
