Research & Development Department (RDD) New tasks, new roles: Libraries in the tension between Digital Humanities, Research Data, and Research Infrastructures Dr. Stefan Schmunk | Jasná, 3 rd April 2017 @DARIAHde @Stefan. Schmunk
Overview – Agenda • Introduction • Digital Humanities: DARIAH-DE and Text. Grid • Research Data in the Arts and Humanities • Digital Scholarly Editions as new tasks for Research Libraries • Conclusion 22/02/2021
The Research & Development Department • • • Largest library R&D in Germany 2016: 30 FTE, abound 14 third-party funded projects > 80% third-party funding Funded in 2002 mission: develop new infrastructure services for research
Digital Humanities – an interdisciplinary approach Arts and Humanities & Social Science Digital Humanities = Applied digital enabled research in the Arts and Humanities Computer Science Libraries & Archives – Information Science 22/02/2021

… supports digitally-enabled … supports the creation of research and teaching in the digital editions in the humanities arts and humanities and cultural studies - - Tools for text enrichment and annotation - Repository for long term preservation - Training and education Teaching Research Data Technical Infrastructure Research driven and conceptualized as an architecture of participation 22/02/2021
DARIAH-DE – four main tasks Teaching (support, training) • Research (DH & Information Science) Workshops on methods, expert colloquia, Summer Schools • DH methods and practices • Coordination of national and • Use Cases: Annotation, Big Data international curricular developments • Tools and services • Bibliography Doing Digital Humanities Research Data (research data collections, research data management) Technical Infrastructure • Best practices for metadata, (development and provision of standardised exchange of data, infrastructural services) ontologies • collaborative research environments, • Development of generic search, virtual machines, monitoring, collection and schema registry authentication and authorization • Development of a tool based infrastructure etc. federation architecture for research data 22/02/2021
Research Data – Arts and Humanities Definition Research Data “By research data in the Arts and Humanities is meant all those sources and outputs that are based on a research question, collected either by scholars, libraries, archives or any other institution, which may be described, evaluated and/or generated and stored in machine-readable form for analyzing, archiving purposes, citability, and for further processing. ” 22/02/2021
Research Data – Arts and Humanities • Metadata, bibliographical data, finding aids • Digital and/or digitized data and/or digital representation of analog data • Digital objects (tool generated data) • Full text, transcripts • Enriched full text • Images, movies, music & notes • Authority files, controlled vocabularies, ontologies • . . . 22/02/2021
Example: Epigraphical Database Research Data Collection – epidat • • • Data: 30. 000 inscriptions of more than 130 Jewish cemeteries in Germany and the Netherlands (1050 -2000) Contains: Digitized Data, transcripts, maps, photographs, and archival sources Methods: Visual Analytics, Named-Entity-Recognition, Temporal-Spatial Visualization Source: http: //www. steinheim-institut. de/cgi-bin/epidat? info=edv&art=art 6 22/02/2021

What is the situation for the Digital Humanities? Research data are representations of observations, objects, or other entities used as evidence of phenomena for the purposes of research or scholarship” C. L. Borgman (2015). Big Data, Little Data, No Data: Scholarship in the Networked World. New challenges in the Humanities dealing with Research data concerning: • Discovering data • Access to data • Extended search strategies for data • Using data tools (and generating data) • Linking articles with data enhanced publications 22/02/2021

The wave Growth of Information – User requirements – e. g. : Science 2. 0, collaborative networks, social media Diversity of media types and formats
New Tasks for Libraries: Data, Infrastructures, and Digital Humanities • Documentation of research data for replication and detection of fraud • Sharing and publication of research data: „old“ data for new research • Building up research infrastructures for scientist • Keep digital data usable despite changes in technology, organisations, background knowledge, . . . • Supporting researchers during the project phase (embedded data managers) Research Object 22/02/2021 Research Data observational data, audio, video, interviews, statistical data, . . . Publication
Consequences for Libraries • Scientific Information is more than a journal article or a book • Libraries should open their catalogues to any kind of information • The catalogue of the future is NOT ONLY a window to the library‘s holding, but • A portal in a net of trusted providers of scientific content 22/02/2021
„Vision 2030“ for Libraries will be. . . • • • Data provider Information centers (advise and consult scientist) Scientific software houses Training facilities Experts for enhanced publications Hoster of research infrastructures Research institutions in the field of information science Networked information facilities (open interfaces). . . 22/02/2021
It is not only a challenge … … it is an opportunity Libraries should ride the wave … 22/02/2021
