What does credible mean? Trustworthy, believable, reliable
3 majors things to look at in a source • Look at the author: is the author an expert? What degree does he or she have? • Look at the company/organization that published the work: who runs it? is there any bias? • Look at the date of publication: is it recent? Or is it so old that it could be wrong by now?
Research on the Internet • Is everything on the Internet trustworthy? • Is Google a source? • Anyone can write ANYTHING…
Other factors to consider when evaluating credibility Site domain: . com, . org, . gov, . edu, . net Writing/Grammar: If it’s poorly written, it’s probably poor information Common sense
If you come across a website or author you’ve never heard of, • Look it/him/her up • Who started it? What was its purpose? Who can write on it? • Who is she/he? What experience or education does he/she have?
What about videos? • Videos can be credible sources, but you have to look at the same things: • Speaker • Company/organization • Date
