Aims of the Session • To provide you with an overview of the University’s policies and strategies relevant to research and enterprise • To introduce the support and guidance available to research staff at different points in their research careers

RSO Purpose: To support implementation of the University's research strategy • Objectives: • To maximise the research income • To support preparations for external assessments (REF) and policy development. • To support compliance with external regulatory requirements
RSO supports three primary areas Research Support Office Grants and Contracts Research Finance Research Development
RSO: Research Grants and Contracts • Advise on costing of grant applications to noncommercial bodies (e. g. RCs, charities, EU and UK government) • Final approval of costs (particularly staff) • Authorisation of submissions on behalf of University • Negotiating contract terms with funders • Dedicated team to help apply for and manage EU projects • Led by Brian Berry bb 118@le. a. cuk
RSO: Research Finance (Post Award) • Post-award financial management of externally funded research projects • Responsible for submitting invoices, claims and statements of expenditure • Keep watch on expenditure and advise staff • Liaison with grant holder and Personnel Office about employing staff on grants • Led by : Judith Mogra sjm 21@le. ac. uk • Judith’s team covers both RSO and EBD projects
RSO: Research Development • Bring together interdisciplinary groups of researchers • Run events to bring researchers together (e. g. Research Festival) • Provide training - applying for grants, understanding impact – working with ITS, LLI, Library, EBD etc. • Co-ordinate preparations for REF • Also prepare REF grant data, support meetings, provide guidance on regulations and check submissions • Support University Research Policy Committee • Led by Juliet Bailey - jab 9@le. ac. uk Juliet is also team lead for AHL and SS Colleges support

Planning and writing • Proposals/applications may be submitted in response to a call (managed mode) or may be unsolicited submission (responsive mode) • Funders have different procedural rules for applications: • Research Council’s use Je-S system • Charities have their own online systems (E. g. egap, e-grants)
Costing: approval procedures • All applications must be processed through LUCRE - the University’s costing package • To get an account need to fill in a SAP registration form that can be found on ITS webpages • Most departments have people who check costs before forwarding to RSO • Costs must be approved before the application is goes to the funding body - particularly important for staff costs • LUCRE training available via RSO – contact David Downton dd 22@le. ac. uk or Steve Loddington spl 13@le. ac. uk
Receipt of award: RSO’s role • Receives notification of awards • Checks it is consistent with proposal • Reviews contracts and negotiates terms and conditions, if necessary • Accepts awards on behalf of the University
Awards acceptance • Once the award is formally accepted by RSO details will be announced in monthly awards reports • Award paperwork is passed on to Research Finance for setting of account code • PI and Departmental Rep will be sent a Project Detail Notification form to confirm budget codes and set up for actual expenditure.
Manage: Monitoring of research project outcomes • RCs have started to capture data on the research outcomes. Such as : • Research Outcomes System (ROS) for AHRC, BBSRC, ESRC and EPSRC grant holders • STFC, MRC and Wellcome Trust (Research Fish) • Captures: Publications, IP, conferences • RSO coordinating exercise with Departments
Research Code of Conduct • Provides guidelines for responsible practice in research, and procedures for dealing with misconduct. • Addresses issues such as: § research ethics § data collection and storage § conflict of interest § publication and authorship § supervision of research trainees § peer review of funding applications and manuscripts § misconduct in research

Ethics: Research involving People Research projects involving human subjects require ethical approval. Two research ethics systems: • NHS ethics process (lead by NRES) for research involving NHS patients or NHS staff or facilities • Internal University process for non-NHS studies involving human participants • University system uses an online ethics form –new system to be launched on 5 th May https: //ethicsapp. le. ac. uk • There are 5 college level committees responsible for conducting ethics review • University process is overseen by the University Committee for Research Ethics
IRIS Integrated Research Information System • Login at https: //iris. le. ac. uk/login. html • University wide system for recording academic research activities. • The system holds information on publications, grants, professional activities. • Data is captured, linked, used and reused for a variety of purposes e. g.
