Frequently-Asked-Questions: SECPSD Reporting Guide Version 3. 0 Do I need to have evidence of conversations, observations, and products for each outcome? § You do not need to have a conversation, observation, and product for each outcome. § Throughout the year, for each subject, you should have an overall balance of products, conversations, and observations. One should not be more prevalent than the others. § In addition to allowing students to show their learning in different ways Triangulation ensures the evidence gathered is reliable and valid.
Why Should I Triangulate? There are outcomes that would be more validly measured by observation or conversation.
Triangulation is not an Equilateral Triangle Teachers can identify outcomes that must be assessed with observation or conversation, in whole or in part, by referring to the curriculum. Examples: Math 3 ---N 3. 1 Demonstrate understanding of whole numbers to 1000 (concretely, pictorially, physically, orally, in writing, and symbolically) Art 8 ----CP 8. 1 Create dance compositions that express ideas and student perspectives on social issues (e. g. , poverty, racism, homophobia, sustainability, gangs). ELA 10 ---CC A 10. 3 Use oral language to express a range of information and ideas in formal (including a prepared talk on a familiar topic, an oral presentation of a passage of prose or poetry, and a retelling of a narrative or a recounting of an experience or event) and informal (discussion and group work) situations.
Why Should I Triangulate? n By setting up your assessment to incorporate observations and conversations, it ¨ allows you to make your formative assessments in real-time ¨ provides a vehicle to more easily adjust instruction as needed, in a timely fashion. ¨ decreases the amount of ‘product’ assessment that needs to be done
Leveraging Triangulation for the Purpose of DI for Individual Students: Whole group assessment strategy Leveraging for individuals for the purpose of DI
Myth In order to be fair, we need to use all the same assignments, items, tests and tasks to determine a grade or mark. *from Sandra Herbst and Anne Davies A Fresh Look at Grading and Reporting in High Schools connect 2 learning p. 17
Fact Success for all students…requires differentiation…our curriculum documents do not provide a list of evidence that all students need to produce in exactly the same way…so we need to focus on giving students chances to learn and show what they have learned. *from Sandra Herbst and Anne Davies A Fresh Look at Grading and Reporting in High Schools connect 2 learning p. 17
Math 7 Products, Observation or Conversation Assessment? P 7. 2 Demonstrate an understanding of equations and expressions by: n distinguishing between equations and expressions n evaluating equations n verifying solutions to equations
Math 7 P 7. 2 Product Assessment Evaluating Equations Verifying Equations 4 x + 8 = 28 ¨ 4 x + 8 – 8 = 28 – 8 ¨ 4 x = 20 ¨ x = 5 4 x + 8 = 28 ¨ 4(5) + 8 = 28 ¨ 20 + 8 = 28 ¨ 28 = 28
Math 7 P 7. 2 Observation Assessment Solving and Verifying Equations 4 x + 8 = 28
Math 7 P 7. 2 Conversation Assessment Solving and Verifying Equations 4 x + 8 = 28
Documenting Products, Observations and Conversations The following are some of the tools that may be used to document products, observations or conversations ¨ ¨ ¨ Rubrics Checklists Acronym checklist Rating scales Anecdotal records Points awarded for specific criteria
Observation/Conversation Acronym Checklist
Observation/Conversation Record
Using Technology to Document Observations and Conversations Record the learning activity by video. n Record the learning activity by using an audio recording device. n Record their emerging understandings, working theories, solutions and reflections through a classroom Web site; e. g. , chatroom, blogs, wiki. n
Using Technology to Document Observations and Conversations The following are some apps that may be used to collect assess products, observations or conversations Explain Everything--$8. 49/i. Pad or $4. 24/i. Pad for 20+ ¨ See. Saw--FREE APP ¨ Google Forms--FREE APP ¨
Explain Everything
See. Saw n Seesaw is a digital portfolio that allows students to save and submit a variety of work -- videos, photos, text, and drawings. They can reflect on their work in writing or with a voice recording when they submit it, and teachers can offer feedback as well.

Learning Activity: How Can I Use Observations and Conversations in My Class?
Professional Growth Plan (PGP) n n You will need to apply your knowledge of triangulation as part of your PGP. How will you apply and document your learning? ¨ *Be sure to share the assessment tool you created in the Observations and Conversations Assessment Opportunities Activity with your administrator and include it as part of your PGP evidence*
