REPULPABLE TAPES

Types of splices Ø butt (by a single coated tape) Ø overlap (by a double coated tape) Ø flying (by a double coated tape)

Butt splices

Butt splices l the splice applied only on one side allows thinner splices but the adhesive could get through the two edges of paper and sticks to the layer below

Butt splices l applying two tapes (one per side) you avoid this issue and for reducing the thickness you could use tapes of different widths and/or shift them to each other

Butt splices l l compared to overlap splices, butt splices usually allow the splice to be thinner a thin splice is important because it has to pass through narrow gaps of the producing or converting machines (for example the gap between calender rolls)

Butt splices Ø They are mainly used at l l rereelers and rewinders especially when the splice has to go to papermill final Customer Ø Rereeler - An intermediate winding machine for large rolls Ø Rewinder - A winding machine typically composed of an unwind, slitters, and windup

Butt splices l l l The contact between the 2 reels to be spliced happens while the machine is not running (“STATIC” splice) both the application of the tape and the splicing contact are obtained manually (“MANUAL” splice) they may stay inside also for a long time before the reel is reprocessed (“PERMANENT” splice)

Butt splices Ø STATIC AND MANUAL: there is no need for a product with a very high tack; usually also a medium tack is sufficient Ø PERMANENT: none of the components of the adhesive has to migrate into the spliced paper (by heat and/or pressure); otherwise we could have a “bleeding” effect

Butt splices Ø The following products DO HAVE these characteristics: l l l repulpability according to TAPPI UM 213 A adhesives without any migrating components (no bleeding) good adhesion/tack balance excellent shear resistance 200°C temperature resistance (for short periods)

Butt splices. How to match the right product Ø BN 6368 THIN l l l as BN 6368 but with a calandered paper backing (lower thickness) to strenghten the overlap manual splice (safety splice) slit liner, red printed and rally stripe versions

Butt splices. How to match the right product Ø BN 6369 l l as BN 6368 but with a tissue paper backing (very low thickness) to strenghten the overlap manual splice (safety splice)

Butt splices. How to match the right product l BN 6370/6375/6376/6373/6383 • • single coated, linerless, siliconized backing various thicknesses and colours used for high tensile strength types of paper the splice cannot be printed or coated because of the siliconized backing

Overlap splices Ø simple overlap (by double coated tape) Ø strengthened overlap (by double coated + 1 or 2 single coated tapes)

Overlap splices Ø They are mainly used at l l l rereelers and rewinders (like butt splices) supercalenders sheeters

Overlap splices Ø Like butt splices, they are made: l l l while the machine is not running (“STATIC” splice) manually (“MANUAL” splice) also, they may stay inside also for a long time before the reel is reprocessed (“PERMANENT” splice)

Overlap splices Ø STATIC AND MANUAL: there is no need for a product with a very high tack; usually also a medium tack is sufficient Ø PERMANENT: none of the components of the adhesive has to migrate into the spliced paper (by heat and/or pressure); otherwise we could have a “bleeding” effect

Overlap splices. How to match the right product Ø BN 6367 l double coated, standard choice

Overlap splices. How to match the right product Ø BN 6365 l l double coated faster repulpability and greater adhesion compared to BN 6367

Overlap splices. How to match the right product Ø BN 6367 HT l l double coated higher amount of adhesive (High Tack) compared to BN 6367 for heavy weight papers for core starting applications

Typical overlap splices SIMPLE STRENGTHENED BN 6367/6365/6367 HT BN 6368 TH/6369

Paster tabs Ø used during automatic splice preparation to fix the last lap of the reel Ø they are needed to avoid the lifting of the last lap during the initial reel rotation Ø when there is the splicing contact they must easily break
