• • 1854 in response to Pro-slave settlers crossing the parallel Horace Greeley, Salmon Chase, and Charles Sumner First organized convention February 22, 1856 First nominating convention June 17, 1856 Nicknamed Grand Old Party (GOP) in 1888 1860 -1931 dominated elections Less Government, less taxation, and more privatization History
• • Less Government, less taxation, and more privatization Governed by morals and Christian values Right wing Conservative Republican Values/Concerns
• Against President Obama’s Reform • Agree that health care needs a change • “We support common-sense health care reforms that would lower costs, preserve quality, end lawsuit abuse, and maintain the health care that Americans deserve. We oppose government-run health care, which won’t promote competition, and won’t promote health care quality and choice. ” http: //www. gop. com/index. php/issues/ Health Care Reform
• 1) Quality health care coverage affordable and accessible for all • 2) Protect Americans from being forced into government-run health care: – a) eliminate health care coverage that more than 100 million Americans currently receive through their job – b) limit choice of doctors and medical treatment options – c) result in the federal government taking control your health care • 3) Let Americans who like their health care coverage keep it, and give all Americans the freedom to choose the health plan that best meets their needs. • 4) Ensure that medical decisions are made by patients and their doctors, not government bureaucrats. • 5) Improve Americans’ lives through effective prevention, wellness, and disease management programs, while developing new treatments and cures for life threatening diseases. Republican Plan
• Top Stakeholders • • Republican Party Democratic Party Insurance Companies General Public Stake Holder Association
• Too much government evolvement in health care • Obama. Care didn’t address some of the most simple ways of saving money • Healthcare reform will end up costing American Citizens billions of dollars in unnecessary taxes • Will lead to decreased jobs, decreased income, and decreased economic status of the United States • Take money out of most people’s pocket, and increased insurance premiums for those who can afford insurance. Main Concerns
• American’s Healthcare reform is going in the wrong direction • Transferring power to Washington bureaucrats who will control the dollar and decisions that should be in the hands of individual patients and their families Social Considerations
• New law concentrates enormous power to the Health and Human Services (HHS) • Creates giant network for micromanagement of health plans, benefits, insurance markets, and unprecedented intervention into the detail of health care financing and the delivery of medical model • Allows HHS Secretary to apply provisions to the law and enforce it as she sees it fit, thus granting the Secretary the right to determine winners and losers Social Considerations
• PPACA is going to cost US taxpayers BILLIONS of Dollars!!!!! • PPACA imposes numerous tax hikes that transfer more than $500 billion over 10 years from hardworking American families and businesses to Congress for spending • PPACA contains 18 separate tax increases that will cost taxpayers $503 billion between 2010 and 2019 • As a result PPACA will slow economic growth, reduce employment, and suppress wages Economic Considerations
• “All tax increases have negative economic effects because higher taxes take resources from the productive hands of private sectors and transfer them to the wasteful hands of politicians”. • Moneys created by increased taxation will be spent by the government on other issues besides health care reform Tax Considerations
• Under Section 1501 of PPACA, individuals that do not have a health insurance policy that meets the federal definition of “minimum essential benefits”, will face a monetary fine and punishment • Businesses with greater than 50 employees that fail to provide “adequate” coverage for their employees will face penalties up to $2, 000 per employee • These penalties will increase cost to companies, and reduce business growth and hiring. • People making near minimum wage will not be worth hiring if the employer has to provide medical insurance Economic Considerations
• People must pay taxes…… • Whether we agree with Health Care reform or Republicans views of healthcare, we all must pay our taxes • Numerous mandatory issues to the Health Care reform Legal Consideration
• Provide individual tax relief for all persons purchasing private health insurance, regardless of where they work • Eliminate barriers to individuals purchasing health care coverage that best suits their personal needs across state lines • Promote new group purchasing arrangements based on individual membership organizations and various associations, including unions, fraternal, ethnic, and religious based groups Republicans Plans for Change
• Improve consumer-directed health options, such as health savings accounts, health reimbursement arrangements, and flexible spending accounts. • Expand states’ ability to develop consumer-based reforms that enable states to customize solutions for their citizens • Evaluate Medicare rules and regulations and eliminate those that are receiving illegal or unfair benefits. And eliminate fraud and abuse of the Medicare system Republicans Plans for change
• Stop new tax increases and promote tax cuts that would expand private insurance coverage and grow the economy • Strengthen premium assistance in Medicaid to enable young families to obtain private health insurance coverage • Improve patient-centered health care models for those on Medicaid • Make the ban on taxpayer-funded abortion permanent and the government-wide Republicans Plans for Change
• Moral Right • Devastate the economy • Take needed funding away • Economic Good/Social Service • Social Good • Less choice • Who receives services • Business Ethics • Less income = Less voice Ethical Considerations
• Top Stakeholders • • Republican Party Democratic Party Insurance Companies General Public Stake Holder Association
• Democrats feel Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) passed in 2010 met all healthcare needs in America • Provides more options for Medicare and Medicaid assistance programs • Democrats are in complete disagreement of the Republican viewpoints on a “new” healthcare reform • Believe all progress made, will be lost • Feel Medicare recipients will loose funding, and possibly insurance coverage Democratic Party Opinion
http: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=-usmv. YOPfco D. Senator Alan Grayson
• Obama’s Health Care Reform= $$$$$$ for insurance companies • Insurance Companies support Dem. Reform because the nearly 40 million Americans uninsured will be seeking insurance • Will be able raise premiums for higher class, to accommodate lower class spenders • Individuals that make over $250, 000 will pay 1. 5 -2% more for premiums Insurance Companies
• Short Term= Negative • No longer can sell policies with lifetime cap • Can not exclude coverage on children for pre-existing conditions • In 2014, can not exclude adults with pre-existing conditions (will lead to explosion in premiums) • $200 billion dollars of government money will be cut from Medicare Advanced coverage(Humana). Insurance Companies
• Long Term= Positive • Initially premiums will increase for people who don’t meet government assistance criteria, but eventually premiums should decreased for everyone • Nearly 23 million US citizens will be obtaining medical insurance by 2014 = $$$$$$ for insurance companies • Government will assist lower income people and small companies (less than 50 employees) to obtain insurance, which leads to $$$$$$ for insurance companies Insurance Companies
• Mutual Respect/Disrespect • Want to save money on healthcare and on medical insurance • In 2011 only 39% of Americans were in approval of Obama’s Health Care Reform initiative • Currently Higher Class are paying increased premiums to accommodate Lower Class • Most US citizens are unaware of how Democratic or Republican Health Care Reform will affect them • Public will not want to pay more taxes • Public want to have choices for their healthcare General Public
• Republicans Viewpoints have been expressed • Economic and Social considerations is the biggest issue with healthcare reform • Democrats typically disagree with the Republican Party’s thoughts • General Public are the taxpayers, and the ones that will reap the negative/positive aspects of healthcare reform • Dallas and Dana’s Final Thoughts and Person Viewpoints Closing Statements
