Egg �Female sex cell also called an ovum �Did you know? The largest cell in the human body is the female ovum, or egg cell. It is about 1/175 inch in diameter.
Fertilization �The joining of a sperm and an egg.
Zygote �A zygote is a fertilized egg
Ovary �The ovaries are the female reproductive glands that produce eggs. �Located slightly below the waist, one ovary on each side of the body.
Estrogen �Female sex hormone produced in the ovaries that triggers the development of some adult female characteristics including: �Widening of the hips �Breast development
Fallopian Tube �Passageways for eggs as they travel from the ovary to the uterus. �The place where fertilization takes place. �Each month, one of the ovaries release a mature egg, which enters the nearest fallopian tube.
Uterus �A hollow muscular organ about the size of a pear. If an egg is fertilized, it becomes attached to the wall of the uterus. �The cervix is the lower portion of the uterus and is a common site of cancer in women.
Vagina �A muscular passageway leading to the outside of the body. �The vagina or birth canal, is the passageway through which a baby leaves the mothers body.
Ovulation �The process in which an egg is released from the ovaries is called ovulation. �Once it is released, it can be fertilized for the next few days if sperm are present.
Menstruation �When an egg is not fertilized it starts to break down along with the lining of the uterus. �When the extra blood and tissue of the thickened lining pass out of the body through the vagina it is called menstruation. �On average, menstruation last about four to six days.
Menstrual Cycle �The monthly cycle of changes that occur in the female reproductive system.
