Reproduction Mating Systems Two Types of Breeding Purebred
Reproduction Mating Systems
Two Types of Breeding • Purebred • Crossbred
Purebred • Breeding two animals who are of the same breed • Used more often to sell seed stock • Can be a very prestigious system
Crossbred • Used for commercial animals
Hybrid Vigor • Performance of offspring is greater than of the parents
Genetic Superiority • Animals that are superior to other animals based on traits
Inbreeding • Mating of animals closely related • Intensive- mating of animals closely related, for several generations • Linebreeding- maintains high genetics relationship to an outstanding ancestor
Outbreeding • Breeding animals not closely related • Species cross, crossbreeding, outcross, and grading up
Species Cross • Crossing of animals of different species • Horse and donkey
Cross Breeding • Mating of animals of breeds
Outcross • Mating of unrelated animals, same breed
Grading up • A system by which commercial grade females are consistently crossed with purebred males of the same breed each mating • These offspring are again crossed with the same breed • This crossing continues until the offspring are enough of one breed to be considered solely that breed
Natural Selection
Genetic Enserneiring • The process of transferring genes without male or female mating
