Representation of gender in music videos across different genres.
Pop – Katy Perry • In modern pop music videos, sexuality is often used as a means of communicating a message, but also selling the record. Pop music needs to sell. It also needs to appeal to a wide audience. The sexual manner of the videos can be inspiring to some, but also creates a lot of talking points due to the controversial side of the video. • Women tend to objectify themselves for their own benefit.
Rap – Kendrick Lamar • Women are portrayed as objects in rap videos, belonging to the man, usually the artist. This links in with hierarchy. A rapper needs to look good amongst others, therefore being surrounded by women increases their popularity and reputation. • Songs often have explicit lyrics and references to sex from the perspective of the male.
Indie – Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds • In Indie videos, women tend to challenge the common stereotypes which they are associated with. This could link in with the Indie genre due to it’s fairly rebellious nature. • Indie music has a generally relaxed view to the music industry, therefore doesn’t need sexuality in videos in order to sell. In the video for ‘Dream On’ by Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, common stereotypes of women being inferior to men are challenged in the form of a boxing match between a husband wife.
