Repository Reboot The Center for Digital Scholarship Stephen F. Austin State University
Original Repository • Acquired Digital Commons hosted software in April 2012; managed by the University Archivist/Records Manager in East Texas Research Center • One librarian responsible for management and marketing of IR • Branded Scholar. Works@SFA • Conducted presentations to faculty • Seed content entered into Digital Commons
Problems Identified • Lack of commitment and focus regarding development of the repository • The were strict constraints on content that limited participation • Faculty interest and participation rates were low; approximately 250 documents were submitted to the IR in 2012 -2013 (1 ½ years)
The Reboot • The Library recognized the need to move forward with further enhancement and development of the repository. • In Fall 2013, the Library created the Center for Digital Scholarship (CDS) to focus on digital research, scholarship, and management of digital platforms. • With staff drawn from other Library departments, the CDS implemented changes for a repository reboot. • Four staff members work on various facets of the repository along with other job responsibilities.
Reboot Strategies • Define mission and purpose of CDS in relation to Scholar. Works with stronger administrative support and guidance • Create job descriptions and workflows for each staff member that reflect a renewed commitment • Share responsibility among staff members; hold frequent meetings with staff and guests; include written agendas; encourage discussion and humor! • Rebrand redesign the repository: Scholar. Works • Encourage more diverse content within the IR • Develop talking points and brief promotional demonstration
